Gary... . You asked a question about a devise to see the stoplight?

YUP - large roof overhangs in the front, plus addition of the then-popular sun visors made it hard to see the overhead stoplites - so some new cars offered the devices mounted to the dashboard to make it easier to see the lights - and the aftermarket also sold them... ;)

Why was a Chevy six called a "stovebolt"? Because that it would have been a better use of the iron.

What automaker actually produced a gas turbine powered car? Rover

Hill-Holder is a name for the mechanism invented by Studebaker that holds the brake until the clutch is at the friction point, making it easier to start up hills from a stop in manual transmission automobiles. It was first introduced in 1936 as an option for the Studebaker President.

The Hill Holder was on Subaru's to help sell manual transmissions to those who didn't master starting on a hill, no idea how they worked.

GMC, General Motors Co. I don't think so. I read a Popular Mechanics or something that showed a picture of a military truck, chain drive if I remember correctly, Grabowski Motor Corp. I think later bought by the GMC we know or something real close to that as the origin of GMC, maybe a Chevy fan out there can detail this one.

Motorola, same type source, derived from Motorized Victrola due to the size and bulk of the early car radios.

What was that knob on the dash that you pulled out to start old stuff?

i believe ford had the first v8. i had a 49 and it had the flat head v8. i believe ford came out with a v8 in 1943-45?

NOPE - Ford had the V8 long before that - and other makes even older than that.

NOW, for the "mechanics", how did you adjust the valve lash on the flathead Ford V8 engines... ;)

Chevy had a V8 in 1918. That was before it was owned by GM.

What was odd about the clutch in a '50 and '51 Hudson? It may have been on some other years.

What was a Supermatic Drive and what car had it?

What year did Ford switch to hydraulic brakes?

What car used the Suburban model name in 1950?

What was different about a Cord?

The sailing ship hood ornament was on a Plymouth.

Ford had a V/8 in about 1933. Also there was a Lasalle with a V/8 in the thirties, not to mention the Lincoln Zepher with a V/12. bgt

The first Ford V8 was the '32 model B. It was actually built like two four cylinder engines because there was a separate ignition system and cooling system for each side.

Where was the distributer on Ford flatheads built before the '49 model year?

What was a torque tube in the old cars? Name a model that had one.

I used to work on a lot of these old cars in the '50s.

Whitworth, isn't that a British thread size format? neither fish nor foul.

Something like that. There were Whitworth wrenches. I had a Matchless motorcycle that had to be worked on with Whitworth tools. I think I still have a couple of those wrenches.
