Yep. You had to take the hose off to get at it. The lower hose could cause you to cut your thumb just above the nail which could add some festive language to the job.

Yeah and the water pump had an ear on it that was also one of the front motor supports. You might be an old time mechanic if you ever change a rod on an old chevy 6 without pulling the head. you coulldnt change them all but some would come down far enough to remove the wrist oin from the pan side. Also if you ever changed he cam gear without pulling the cam. bg

Close, sort of. The movie was based around a Challenger. But, the actual car crashed into the bulldozers was something else. A Camaro. They thought the Challenger was too sweet to blow up.

In addition, if you had a bad rod bearing on that engine how did you do the repair? How was the rod bearing clearance adjusted?

I'll help. We are talking about who could legally put the name on their cars. Remember the name was trademarked. (Not Ford, Who is Monteverdi?)

My Renault R-17 Gordini had three lug nuts, on each wheel! Seems if you forgot to tighten them after rotation, the ride got kind of wobbly!

The rod had a scoop on the lower cap which "scooped" oil from a trough under each rod. There was also a spout in the trough aimed at the scoop or dipper. I suspect the special tool was to align the oil nozles. The pan fasteners were slotted screws. If a rod was bad you had to replace the whole rod as they had babbited in place bearings, no inserts. Some of the rods could be removed from the pan side but not all. I don't remember which but I have done the job. The rods came with a shim pack at the split line on both sides and the clearance was adjusted by removing or adding shims. bg
 
There was a tool that could be used to pour babbit to make a new bearing in a worn out rod. I've never done that, but my father-in-law was an expert. If you were a little short of money and had a loose rod, you could file the rod cap ends to get a little more miles out of a worn bearing if you had removed all the shims.



The special tool fit on the pan and was used to align the nozzles. The Chevy didn't actually dip the oil. It depended on the nozzles being aimed properly. The troughs in the pan were to support the nozzles. The cranks in those engines were pretty hard so a little bit of rod knocking didn't flatten the journals.



Buick straight eights used the same system.



Those engines had really low oil pressure because of the dipper lube system, but the oil pumps really moved the oil.

Fist answer not exactly correct. The oil sprayed into the dippers as the rod came around and lined up with the oil tube. This alignment was critical. This is why a lot of 216 and early 235's (before 1954) burnt up rod bearings early.
 
In World War II, the willys jeep contracted a foreign company to build them.
