What fuel additive do you use?

I'm trying to find Fleet-Tech locally. The international dealer can order at almost $11. 00 per pint. 1 case minimum.



The local Peterbilt dealer can order for just under $7. 00 per pint. Geno's wants $7. 75 per pint which would also have to add shipping.



I was until recently with the no additives group until my truck idled and ran rough for about one minute on start up a few times. I tried sea foam. It cleared up the rough running and also increased my MPG's from just over 20 to 22. I won't continue using sea foam because I don't know if its approved by Cummins. I came across info on Cummins Turbo Diesel Treatment (Fleet-Tech).



I will try this. Their info claims a very good lubricity number. I am more interested in that but if it increases mileage also, that's a big plus. . !!

Fleetguard Turbo Diesel All Season Fuel Treatment.

I never tried Stanadyne as it is not approved by Cummins. Probably great stuff but I wanted to try the Cummins product first if I can get my hands on some at a reasonable price. It is available on Geno's site but the shipping will make it expensive. If I cannot get some locally I will order some from Geno's along with other items I need to order anyway from them, filters, etc.



I bought the Sea Foam at Advanced Auto Parts. It is a fuel and oil additive, claims to cure most ills. It surely made my engine run smoother and an unbelievable jump in fuel mileage running unloaded. I just don't know if it increases lubricity of the ULSD.

What about high sulpher cutting oils? They dissolve very easily in diesel, and burn readily when heated in a mist form. I have quite a large supply and can get however much I think I need, for various machining operations. I think I am going to try this. How much per tank? I'll have to get analysis on ppm and hope my 2 micron filter doesn't catch the particles.

I use it

When the low sulfur fuels were being introduced I was in the Bosch shop and the owner said Stanadyne was the thing he uses in his personal diesel because Stanadyne makes injection stuff and made the product to protect their equipment. He rebuilds the Bosch pumps so I felt confident in his advice and have used it in every tank since until recently. Recently there was a thread here that lead to, I believe the DieselPlace site, where the members had pitched in to have additives tested. The Opti Lube XPD tested the best behind BioDiesel. I purchased 3 gal. and have been using it for the last 6 tanks in my HO 03. I'm still at 20 mpg hand calculated with the Rokktec backed off to about 1 degree and the Attitude on 4(best mileage empty). Both additives are a little spendy but the truck cost alot and the pumps are real spendy so I'll keep pouring it in. I'd sure like to see more additives tested and would be interested in contributing. Anyone know how that could be put to gather?

What about B-5 biodiesel? I read a thread on DTR about a third party comparo and 3% bio was better than like 15 other additives they tested. B-5 is obviously 5% biodiesel and is available in north central texas where I live. Not only is it the same price but as I read its the beat "additive" and basically free (don't have to go to auto zone and buy something). Thoughts?

Anyone have a special container to use when adding to fuel tank I am looking for a graduated type bottle with a long neck for easy pouring into tank filller

I use one of those plastic bottles that drinking water comes in (16 oz) and fill with an amount appropriate to the size of my fuel tank. Depending on how far I'm driving (vacation or hauling long distances, for example) I may pre-fill a bunch of them. Prior to first use, I let the empty/open bottle sit in the dishrack until I'm sure that there is NO water remaining. Keeps a few out of the landfill and the price is right.

I used the water bottles for a few months but found that the thin bottles were not up to being tossed in the back of a pickup. I was also concerned that some dummy might decided to taste this new drink. I used a marker to draw the skull and cross bones and write poison on the bottles but was still not comfortable using a water or soft drink container.



I purchased 4 of the small bottles of P/S. I now simply refill the small bottles from a gallon container and add about 4 oz of MM oil. I use a platic funnel and dump it in my aux tank. I never use the OEM fill but would get a long nose funnel if I had to. I found a plastic pail with an attached snap down lid. It orignally had cat litter in it. This pail holds my funnel, A few quarts of the P/S MM Oil cocktail and a few shop towels.

When I ran additive, I used 8-ounce poly sample bottles I got from ebay. They withstand the chemicals fine, and they are perfect for a typical 20 gallon or so fill. Plus, you can get them in many sizes (I just chose 8 ounce).

That's an interesting idea. I'd like to see some follow up on this. But if it works, and word gets out you can bet that ULSCO is just around the corner. For what it's worth, I've been pretty religious about using additives since this thread. I use 16oz of Power Service and the standard additive, with . 1 gallon of Howes Diesel Treat as the occasional additive. My fuel economy seems to have rebounded with the use of additives since this thread began.

i use the power service (silver in summer, white in winter) w/ marvel mystery oil. i put in the treatment for 100 gal. and the small mmo. been doing this since 2004. i can hear the difference in the engine. no doubt. it is quieter and smoother. after running a full tank with nothing i definetly hear the difference when i add the brew. get better mpg. (1-2mpg). starts are quicker and less violent.

wasn't a big believer in additives until this last week. just made 2300 mile round trip to texas, started to add power service grey at different amounts and gained 3-5 mpg hand calculated. have kept tracked of every tank of fuel and made this trip several times before. all i can say is wow! firm believer. also found a way to save money in my 98 24 valve, am mixing up to 50% used hydraulic oil to fuel. mileage is better and runs better too

question it all you want, I know what I was getting for mileage. mainly depended on how much I used. at half a quart to 30 gallons at 72mph I got 19mpg. never had gotten over 15 before.
