2004 RAM 3500 Gross Combined Weight Rating with gooseneck hitch (GCWR)

Could someone point me to an official (Dodge web page?) that gives the GCWR for a 2004 RAM 3500 diesel with an automatic transmission and a gooseneck hitch? I have found the GCWR for the 2008 trucks, but not the 2004.



I have tried the Dodge customer service people but they keep coming back with 17,000 lbs GCWR, which I think is too low. 17,000 lbs is about the truck plus a 10,000 lb trailer. The owner's manual also lists the trailer weight as 10,000 lbs, but this is for the Class IV bumper pull hitch which Dodge installs, not the gooseneck hitch.



The owner's manual says the GCWR is on the door sticker with the axle GAWR, but it is not there. If one adds the front/rear GAWR and the 10,000 lb trailer weight of the owner's manual the result is 21,350 lbs for the Class IV hitch, considerable more than the 17,000 lbs which I am getting from customer service.

I think that it is 21,000 with the 373 gears and 23,000 with the 4. 10s, but you will overload either the front axle, rear axle or the trucks GVW before you get to the max GCVR. With a little work you can find it for a 2005 at Home | Dodge Body Builder's Guide

I can share with you that we tow a 20K lb trailer with our 04 dually... I know its not what your looking for but we've been doing this for 240K miles than I retired the truck to local service and it now has close to 275K miles...

If you have specific questions I'll try and answer them...

Opps, sorry, didn't see that it was an auto. I think that it is a little less than the manual trans # I posted. But, like jelag there are no laws to restrict you to the GCVW

My 2005 brochure lists the GCVW for the Hemi as 17,000 and the TD as 23,000. It doesn't detail different diffs or transmissions.

The dually is a 23k, but the SRW is 20k IIRC...

I don't believe there is a distinction between a 3500SRW and 2500 in GVWR of 20k (other than load in the bed)... the dually does increase to 23k.

The GCWR does not change with the SRW or DRW. The drive line is the same. The GVWR WILL change if you go from SRW to DRW since it increases the carrying capacity of the truck. When you go to the DRW although the carrying capacity increases, the extra tires will SUBTRACT from the true payload and towing by the same amount that the extra tires and wheels weight.

I too couldn't find anything stating the legal combined gross weight.

So I'm registered with USDOT at 34,000 lbs. I have been thru several weigh stations and had DOT roadside inspections with nothing said. As far as Dodge is concerned, it may be too much weight, but so far so good.
