Marine Diesel Engine (Tier 3) Question

Where to buy Gas and Diesel from US Oil

OK, I may have found my limits of CJ-4 Rotella 15w40 dino... keep in mind this truck is more/less stock in the realm of things.

Back in September 07, the Wife and I went on a 5500 mile trip to the Rockies with the camper. Did some long hard pulls, had just installed an EGT guage so I kept things in check. I did a before UOA and after UOA... the after indicated the oil had degraded slightly, however wear metals were considered normal for the usage (towing). I changed the oil after the results came back, even though they were considered fine for continued use. The main thing that popped out was the oil had thickened. Keep in mind, this was towing about 3500#s (slide in and small utility trailer), so it wasn't HD towing like others do.

Shortly after, I lost an injector, all were found leaking... blah, blah, blah. I never did change that fresh oil, continued to run it a few months, did a UOA and results were fine... oil looked good. I changed the bypass element and added 1. 5 gallons of make up oil (this means I changed 33% of the total volume)... the oil was still in fine shape (as viewed at the dipstick).

I took this oil to Washington a couple weeks ago... the oil never changed characteristics until I was outrunning some storms on the way back... conditions for the oil were probably considered "severe" as I was averaging around 80mph, almost 1000*F EGTs, around 25psi boost, and around 2800RPM... I was running about a 45mph headwind. This hell run lasted from just south of Minneapolis to DesMoines. I checked the oil at the very next fuel stop... it had changed to resemble that oil I drained after my Rockies trip. Keep in mind, the truck was empty for this trip... I doubt I had more than 300#s in the bed.

After the Rockies, I attributed that oil's condition to the failed (or failing/leaking) injectors. Now I'm not so sure. I'm probably going to pull a UOA tomorrow and verify my visual findings, but I'm confident the oil will come back with an increased viscosity (you can tell it is thicker without much scrutiny). Soot is not a factor as insoluables have came back at 0. 4% or less every UOA.

So I guess its time for a change... based on recommendations I'm probably going to either wait for CJ-4 Rotella 5w40 to appear on shelves (so I don't have to do another change later on) or run 5w40 Schaeffers, both are synthetic variants.

I don't think this newer CJ-4 likes heat... that seems to be the only variable. And don't get me wrong, what I've done to this oil is nothing compared to what some people are doing towing their RVs.

Again, these are my findings and may not represent Rotella in all trucks, just mine.

CI4+ Rotella Synthetic!!! :D :D :D

Not for much longer... the CJ-4 replacement is due out really soon. And nothing against Rotella's synthetic, but its not a real high grade synthetic... although it appears to work quite well.

I was going to do the 5w40 Rotella, but that would mean a fill with CI-4+, then a fill at some point with CJ-4 when I ran out of CI... so I might as well go full tilt to full syn.

Schaeffers seems to have a good report.

Well, I priced 6 gallons of Schaeffers Series 9000, right around $100. Not too bad.

I'm actually going to change all my vehicles over to Schaeffers... the guy will deliver to the house, no shipping. I'll be swapping most stuff over to Schaeffers in the future... everything but the trans fluid.

makes me happy that i bought out sam's when they were clearing out delo 400 for half price :D i've got ci4 for years Oo.

Keep it stored in a more/less constant temp... oil does have a shelf life. If you store it in an unheated garage, it can cause wax crystals to form...

I ordered 6 gallons of Series 9000 5w40 (CJ-4) for the truck and a case of Series 7000 5w30 for the cars. Should have it when I get back from Florida in a couple weeks.

Local Farm store still has Mystic JT8 (7?) in CI4+ grade. Synthetic blend, blah, blah. They also had some CI4+ Rotella.

I'll have to see what rating the Schaefers is- g/f can get it through her shop for a decent price, though if they put it in the new trucks, it has to be a CJ4.

The series 9000 is CJ-4...

I dropped Rotella 5-40 for Schaeffer's 9000 about 15,000 miles ago. I just drained the Scheaffer's and am sending it to Blackstone... It'll be interesting to see how it compares to the analysis I had done when running the Rotella. For some reason, the Rotella indicated unusually high wear numbers for me.

I have only submitted three oil samples for analysis - two CI and one CJ Rotella dino. My viscosity results are similar for the three, but all on the high side. cST values:

1) 15. 72 CI

2) 15. 24 CI

3) 15. 41 CJ

All were towing about 50% of the time with moderate loads (4k to 11k). Doesn't appear to be much difference with CJ and CI. More samples needed to confirm though. Will probably sample my next oil change.

Will probably stay with Rotella CJ for immediate future, but monitor others sample results.

As shown in my UOAs, you can see the Rotella seems to protect quite well... even when abused. Wear numbers are typically low, with only a single UOA (with the suspect degraded oil) show elevated wear numbers.

The viscosity of the normal UOAs is typically within normal ranges, with the abnormal run being elevated for whatever reason.

Someone asked what my oil consumption was like with the oil degraded, this truck has never used more than 1/4 quart per OCI. Which is insignificant IMO.

I'm bringing this back up because I was told my truck can't cruise as hot as it does... here are pictures at a touch over 75mph, on flat level ground. Imagine what the temps would be at almost red line, pushing a 45mph headwind...

I've been reading that the newer formulation doesn't like heat... and I'm sure getting it hot is what is causing my issue.

my 12 valve runs a little past the middle empty on the interstate with the ac on, cummins thermostat, new radiator fan clutch and i got a new temp sensor for the hell of it with no change, it ran maybe 2/3 last time i towed but that was before i changed the 326k mile radiator not sure if it would get up there now or not

I can easily push 1500*F EGT, and 235*F coolant in a WOT run...

I believe it is the nature of this truck, and that is what is causing my oil degradation.
