Great data... I am looking at the GDP 2 mic fuel filter kit and was concerned about the fact that the only horn I could use was theres, but looks like that is not a factor.

I took these a few months back. That is an AFE on the bottom and the gdp on the top. It would be easy to hang the filter off either one

bear in mind the power quotes were for a 3rd gen and their intakes are much narrower than a 2nd gens. ;)
But does this answer the question? The article is touting "Better Heat Insulation" for the CFM+. Why is this?? Are you saying a second gen intake being wider will transfer less heat to the intake air?
 
It has better heat insulation because its a composite and the others are aluminum. So they are saying it won't absorb as much of the engine bay heat.
 
In my own real world testing I saw no advantage in differing materials. The air flows so fast through the intake it is a moot point. At a stop where you may get some heat soak effect there is no advantage to lower IAT.

The actual down the road underhood heat is so close to outside ambient, and ANY of the available intakes so short in length, any real-world differences or effect they would have on intake air temps into the engine would be less than microscopic... ;):-laf

That is my thought as well... . And heck the most I have seen the intake air be above ambient is 35*, thats towing 1100+ on the pyro, 20psi +, a/c on and 95* outside... most the time its only 10-20, so really how much are you going to save??

Do you have a temp gauge somewhere to read intake air temp??

I have a ScanGauge II which reads data from the OBDII port, one of the parameters is IAT (Intake Air Temp) as measured by the MAP in the intake manifold.



I bought a cheap oregon scientific thermometer and put the probe near the intake to read my temps. Never got above ambient while driving.



But thats the air pre turbo right? The air will get heated by the turbo and cooled by the IC... On a normal day there is 10-12* difference, 10-14* with the A/C on. While towing it ranges from 10-30* or 10-40* with the A/C on... This is all on a stock IC with a stock airbox and Amsoil Nanofiber filter.
 
My Edge Attitude monitors air intake temp. I agree with AH64ID. Temps are very close to ambient during cruising and only climb when there is a continued load on the engine and even then, it's not much above ambient. I also run an Airaid intake which does away with the top half of the stock airbox so it is sucking in some underhood air. Unloaded, the highest temp above ambient my Attitude reads is about 10* and thats with ambient temps above 85*.

Yes that is pre air filter. I was running another probe in the engine bay to see if the "cold air intake kit" should really be called a "cold" air intake. I'd say no. The temps in the engine bay were within one to two degrees hotter then the ones in the intake area.

YUP - my finding as well - and as posted in a lengthy related thread - underhood air while the vehicle is moving at any significant speed was typically within 5 degrees or so of outside ambient temp - and various aftermarket intake horns, regardless of materials used, are hardly likely to provide any measurable effect, good OR bad...

Yeah, they really aren't "cold" air intakes, but they do flow better...



Before I had my Dodge I was big into toyotas and rockcrawling. On the 95. 5-04 Tacomas guys would do a "deckplate" mod and put a 4" piping deckplate in there airbox to increase flow, that they could close when fjording water... On the 95. 5-04 it went in the bottom of the box on the fender and did a great job and IAT didn't get too much hotter... well on the 05+ tacoma the airbox was integrated into the intake manifold and the guys that tried this saw much hotter IATs and a loss of performance... .

Thanks for the info; what else does your scan gauge read and where did you mount it??
 
My GDP intake arrived today, one business day earlier than estimated. Installation was as simple as it gets. After letting the truck get up to operating temp I took it for a test drive. All I can say is, WOW! With my Juice set on 6 and my Striker 2 set on 5, the truck is actually breaking the tires loose from a 50mph roll in 3rd with the converter locked up! I thought it was my trans shuddering until I looked out my rear view mirror and saw two patches being laid after the turbo lites!
