My truck came with a BHAF tucked into corner with a bun-gee cord holding it down. There's nothing around it to direct any air into it. I can't imagine this is a good set up with all the heat under the hood? Would I be better off putting in a stock air box? I'm not really interested in spending $$$ for an after market set up. thanks

A BHAF allow more air in, although it is hot air. For your own curiosity try an experiment. Pull a load with the BHAF and then switch to the stock box and see what difference it make on your pyro. Try an after market air filter in the stock box as well. Check this out Performance Systems Manufacturing, LLC Cold air is of course better but what is your budget? Shadrach

Well, I don't have a stock airbox to do a comparison. The after market"shield"boxes I've seen start at about $400. That just seems like to much$$$. I guess I was hoping to see them around the $250 range, max.

when the truck is moving underhood air is about 10-15* higher than outside "cool" air. spend accordingly.

I bought a BHAF filter when I got my truck, but am not going to install it for exactly that reason.

At "normal" rpms I don't need the extra air, and would far prefer to be sucking in air from outside the engine compartment.

I will give it to someone and deliver it free, if you live along a line drawn from Brownsville TX to El Paso TX to Las Vegas NV to Winnemucca NV to Elko Nv to Kansas City MO and back to Brownsville TX, leaving next week!

I ran a BHAF for hundreds of thousands of miles running OTR. I finally built a cold air induction box and installed an Amsoil oval cone filter. My EGTs may have dropped slightly but I didn't do any good side by side comparisons so it may not have been worth the effort. It was fun to build though and I do feel better sucking in cooler air. The cost wasn't an issue either since I built it myself. Pictures on my mods page below. So far I am happy with the Amsoil filter, which I can clean as apposed to the paper BHAF. I have taken oil samples and it is filtering well.

Anyway, as for your question, my opinion would be to go ahead and run the BHAF. I think you will be ahead over a stock box assuming you are modified and need the extra air. If the truck is stock then the stock box might be better.
