Towed our new 5 er over the 4th and it's heavier than our last. I'm used to the bucking but not the squat and sway. Will the extra tires make that much difference?

I currently do not have a trailer, but I do have a 2003 Lance camper model 1010. Dry weight is almost 2900 lbs, so I figure it's around 3500 with water, battery, propane, etc. I am thankful I bought a dually, I really believe it gives greater stability. The camper does not squat my truck, in fact the truck does not sit on the overload spring and I still have at least an inch of travel before I am on the overload spring. My camper weighs more than probably 90% of all fifth wheel hitch weights. Buy a dually for towing or hauling. You will not regret it.

Yes the dually is the safe way to go. I thank you will say so if you get in some high winds also when a 18 wheeler goes by you.

I used to say I would never own a truck with training wheels... But now I say I will never own anything but a dually, I tow a 30 ft 5er and when I towed it with my 98. 5 single rear wheel I used to hate winds and passing big rigs but now with my dually nothing bothers me, the stability is great.

P. S. it's a bit harder to find parking places if you attempt to take it to the mall but I just park in the south forty and take 2 places and when I come out, ther is usually another dually or two doing the same thing.

Had mine since 03 and I asked why I waited so long to get it. The difference for towing is night and day. We have a fairly tall and heavy fiver and towing in wind and other adverse conditions is quite relaxing (other than watching the fuel guage drop like a stone). Like others have said they are large for malls etc. but you get used to it. I was reluctant to get one as I do a lot of snow driving and was concerned about the training wheels but I have found it to be a very stable unit. I don't know where you live or travel but I would not get a 2wd if I had winter conditions or off road driving.

Regret buying a dually?

Nope, not at all, even if I give up my hauling busisness, I will keep the dually around to pull the race trailer... . which may be getting "upgraded" by next season!!:-laf

I had my 95 dually for 10 great years, Sold it and bought a 05 dually. Both were were very stable hauling my then 11' 3" Lance camper. Now that I have a 27' 5er, I don't need a dually, but I won't part with it.

BUT instead of making a baby Dually

as they do with the setup now..... they should make a rig that actually utilizes the larger stance by making the front of the truck larger and having the front tires track with the outside of the back tires (like real serious trucks do) and have the bed actually fit the dual wheels... ... currently all the dual wheel rigs are an after thought and "make-do" rather than "make right!"#@$%!

I have seen many folks who "don't need or want a dually" struggle with the decision then ultimately take the hit and trade their late model SRW trucks for duallies for hauling a heavy slide in camper or towing a heavy fiver after realizing their SRW was unstable or realizing how much better a dually performs. The difference is significant.

There is an old saying that fits: "it is far easier to have too little truck than it is to have too much truck. "

I sure regret buying a dually - so late in life!

The pleasant difference is dramatic, never again a SRW truck!

Everyone told me that buying my dually was overkill... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . now when I hear that I just smile and say" yup!"

I drove a SRW for years and never had the need for a DRW till I purchased the larger RVs. Everytime I look at a dually from either vehicle maker and look at the size I shake my head and say to myself I never thought I would own one. After owning one I would not trade it for a $$$$bucks.

I will say this the extra set of wheels on the rear is real insurance. The only choice even close to a dually would be a new SRW 3500 with 265/285 19. 5s... And add a rear sway bar and 2 extra leaf springs. :-laf

I like your old saying. I also have an old saying that is very fitting for large cabover camper (slide-in). You can handle the camper if you have the right truck under it. The first camper I hauled with an F250 SRW. Not the right truck. The second camper I hauled with my 95 and 05 dually's. The right truck.

On the negative side, I don't like parking it at HomeDepot and I don't like buying tires for it. Actually I always park in the lower forty and take up 2 spaces.

I regret buying my truck period. If I could only go back a year and kick myself. I hate to say it, but the Duramax Allison combo is the best package out there and the trucks themselves are better too.

WOW, that's the first time I ever hear anyone say they like a Chevy with a duramax better then a Dodge with a Cummins. You must have got a lemon.

Nope. Just went from Dodge to Chevy and was lured back by the Mega. Other than the room of the Mega, slightly better fuel economy, the Chevy was a better truck. Don't get me wrong the Cummins is still the best engine, but I am saying overall.

I have no regrets either. I wrestled with the same thing before buying our '05. I'm looking at a bigger 5er or large slide in camper next. I know the truck will be a stable platform for either. As a few people on here have pointed out..... its extra insurance should you have a blow out while hauling a heavy load  and I really enjoy the phrase, "go big or go home" :-laf Get the dually, you'll be glad you did.
