Here are a couple of pics of my newest project. It's a 1939 D2 Caterpillar that has had a hydraulic blade mounted to it. It runs, and moves under it's own power, but it needs some work if it is going to be useful.

I do plan on restoring it, but not to the point of it being a trailer queen. I also want to be able to use it for some light work around my place.

The really amazing thing is, you can still get some parts for it from Cat.

First up though is rebuilding the hydraulic cylinders. The one one the right side leaks past the seal so bad that I can't keep the blade up on that side.

That's the great thing about buying machines from old manufacturers who are still around - they almost always still support the ancient stuff!

With the steady decline of our manufacturing base, however, I'm afraid in another 50 years there won't be any of the good old boys left. :(

What's the engine horsepower and what's that silver thing sitting on the front "bumper"? Does it use mechanical or hydraulic drive for the tracks? Any idea how much it weighs?

And if you don't mind, where did you find it and how much did you pay?

rbattelle I believe the H. P. is in the neighborhood of 25 to 28.

Edit: I just found a specification that states 36 H. P. @ 1525 rpm and 125 ft. lbs @ 1050 rpm.

The silver thing on the bumper looks like an upside down baking tin, it also acts as the hydraulic pump cover.

The tracks are driven mechanicaly. There is a clutch lever and brake pedal for each side, so when you want to turn you pull the clutch lever and step on the brake and that is the way you turn.

I estimate it weighs between 6,000, and 8,000lbs.

I got it from my dad. He use to use it on his property since the eighties, but moved up to a John Deere 550. So it sat for about five years until I talked him out of it.

All it has cost me so for is $198 to have it move from his place to my place.

Vaughn it is a diesel 4cyl. 3 3/4" bore x 5" stroke. It does have a two cylinder horizontally opposed gas pony motor used to start the diesel.

Wow, that is very cool.

I'd love to have a project like that. Some day, when I have some land instead of just a house on a tiny plot.
