Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Torque Converter Locking In and Out

After I had my headwork done to my truck, my torque converter keeps locking in and out no matter what my speed is. I can keep the throttle consistent and it will still lock in and out. I was advised to check all the grounds on the truck as that is what is responsible for it however I was looking for some insight as to some perhaps I have missed. I also was told there is like 15 grounds or something close to that, I cleaned all the battery terminals to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem. Transmission shop said north of 6K to fix right. I found the solution in this forum. I grounded a wire that ran from the TPS, right behind the injection pump to the ecm. I cut the wire and spliced in a ground wire going straight to the battery. Couple of bucks and a few minutes of time and the problem is GONE. That was two years ago and it has been fine ever since. Every shift has been tight and glitch free. I will check to see which wire it is, and if no more responces have been left I will update you with more information.

I checked and cleaned every connection,terminal,ground etc. on my 98. 5. Finally,I purchased a DTT noise filter for $40 I believe. Simple install and a permanent cure for mine. Diesel Transmission Technology - DTT Performance Diesel Transmission and Power Accessories.

Ditto on mine, 3 years and 65k later, still going strong.

Yeah,that's it. It's gone up a bit with the drop in the dollar's value. Call them up on their toll free#

You may also have a bad solenoid in the trans. Mine is starting to act up as well I believe. My lockup switch stops the cycling.



I have a DTT noise filter and voltage regulator. If only we could get aftermarket electronics for the trans.

My friend has a 2001 3500 with the same problem.
Which wire coming out of the Switch is the ground.
I need to do the same think to heres.

It's the Black/Yellow wire. . Done this fix on my 99 but nothing changed...

When I did this, I soldered the connections, soldered the ring terminal to ground and put it on the driver's side with the ground strap from the battery (the ground strap that goes from the battery to the rad. support) Basically, you are cutting the wire and grounding each end of it. Follow the directions exactly.



I wrapped the wires in electrical tape when done. No problems since. I suspect there is a bad connection somewhere causing electrical "noise" which is confusing the electronics. I tried in vain to find a bad connectoin, but could not. I also tried unhooking the batteries for a few hours and doing the throttle reset, three times. That did not work either. This fix worked great, and cost almost nothing. Try it, it should work. Good luck.

tried the aluminum foil today, didnt work either, gonna try this suncoast grounding hopefully friday, just annoying the crap out of me

The noise suppresser from DTT works real good. I have had on on my truck now fro about three years. The thrttle position sensor is in the same loom as the alternator causing the problem according to DTT

Call BD. Their noise filter kit cost me $8 when I bought it last fall. Works like a charm.

It is BD P/N 1300030; it is no longer in their catalog or on-line store for some reason, but they still sell them. I do a lot of business with Summit Racing, and had them set it up in their system when I bought mine, and here you go:

price has gone up a few bucks, but still way less than getting bent over by DTT

I'm glad it worked for you. I held my breath during every shift for a while, but after a few K I was convinced it was fixed. Two years now, no problem
