Leaving work today my Fuel PSI gauge went to 0, came back to 3-4 for a while and then back to 0. The truck was running fine so I continued to run a couple of errands.

Then sitting at a light on TV Hwy it died. After cranking for a long while about 6 or 7 different times (Poor starter) I got it to run if I kept the RPM's above 3,000 or so. I got the truck into the Dairy queen parking lot by slipping the hell out of the clutch (Poor SB OFE) and put my spare lift pump on. I am sure glad I bought that back in April to carry as a spare. It only took 20-25 minutes to change it and I now have 8 psi again.

That's good. My POS left me stranded on the side of the highway in the middle of a snowstorm. I had only been a TDR member for a short time and had my fuel psi gauge on order at the time.

Original filter mounted LP made it 161k, then took a dump on the side of the 210 freeway in SoCal with a can on the trailer !!!#@$%!

Okay, while we're on the subject, I have a few questions myself. I've got about 93K on my '03 2500 and still have the factory lift pump. Since I don't do any towing and occasionally some hauling (mostly road miles), am I living on borrowed time or does the factory lift pump still have a few more miles left in it? Secondly, would a high performance pump, say like a FASS, work better with my Banks system or is the OEM pump good enough? All comments/opinion welcome!

Borrowed time! I made it to 95,451 miles on Christmas Day 2007. The good news was I was only 1 mile from home and had already bought the GDP Walbro 392 pump kit. Just the incentive I needed to actually install it!

I would say you are on borrowed time.

I bought the spare a couple months ago before a long trip.

I am thinking about a FASS just to have something more reliable.

Tim, you're lucky yours made it that long. Mine only lasted 35,000mi but didn't leave me stranded. It just sounded a little sick and didn't shut off after a few seconds like it used to. The towing mileage dropped off by 2 MPG as well. I replaced it with the GDP 392 pump and am happy with it.

The biggest lesson I learned: I really should have had a fuel pressure gauge. For me, that was the only failure I ever had out of the 5 Cummins Dodges I owned and a gauge would have predicted it.

The good thing is the original style pump now comes with a pre filter.

I've seen carter pumps with bits of grass in them (on a street sweeper with a 5. 9) No wonder the pumps are going out. A fuel pressure guage for our trucks is a must.

I didn't put that filter on. I was in a hurry.

I'm trying to decide if I should go add it or not.

I was about to order some filters from Genos and am considering picking up the stock replacement and keeping it in the truck just for the peace of mind. I will go with a FASS down the rode but with some long tows coming up, I will grab one from Genos and keep in the truck.

<Sigh!> I was afraid of that! But then again, I'd rather air it out here before I get stranded along the road somewhere wondering, "WTF!!" Thanks guys, for all of your input! For the near term, I think I'll be contacting Geno's and ordering a factory replacement to carry with me. When the budget allows, I'll be looking at a high performance pump. Even if I never use the factory replacement, it won't go to waste at my house. My wife's '04 2500 has about 44K on it so I can keep it as a back up for hers until I get around to upgrading that one too.

That's exactly what I did. I had a long trip planned and figured I should have a spare.

I will upgrade maybe this winter.

4 in the morning on I-25 near Raton. I don't have a gauge, but do have a BD low fuel pressure light. It came on and stayed on and I babied it towards Raton when it finally died. Just barely made it off the freeway. Had to tow it to Trinidad, CO for repairs. Got the in tank pump (I needed the truck) under warranty ($100 deductible). 71,000 miles. I'm at 100k now and no problems since.

Borrowed time.

With 42,000 on the clock I am glad that I added a fuel pressure gauge. I also keep a tool chest in the bed that has a Geno's OEM style spare pump, a spare belt and two fuel filters. It is my believe that as long as I carry all these parts with me I won't need them. :)
