Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Filter Drain Valve Sticks Open

Stopped for fuel and and opened drain valve for a few seconds to drain any water, then snapped it shut.



As I was driving down the road, I looked in the rear view and saw a line of fuel following me down the road



I stopped and had to open and close the valve a few times before it would stop flowing... by this time the whole bottom of the truck was covered in diesel



I have noticed at times that the valve just doesn't seem to snap open or closed cleanly... anybody else had any problems or similar experience?

Wiggle it up and down a few times. It will drop. Take the little black cap off and take it out and clean it. Mine use to do it too. Try putting a little oil on it.

Those things are a POS! Stick open and spew diesel all over the place. I know one thing, I'm extending the short plastic tube so it hangs down lower and clears the engine compartment and the diff...

Mine does it every time I use it. I've had to take it off, clean & lube it then reinstall it. A real PIA. I don't use it any more.

I stopped using it as well!!!! Now with AirDog and OEM filter removed not necessary anymore.

It's not a great system. The newer ones have a different valve that works much better... might be a retrofit.

Mine started leaking out of that valve. Ended up buying a replacement valve at the st****r. Did not want to lose the whole unit. I have to wonder if it is biodiesel compatible.

I've had this happen too. When I'm finished draining, I usually just snap it open and closed a couple of times, then start the truck w/hood open just to make sure BEFORE driving down the road. Seems to do the job. Although frankly, I don't recall ever getting any water in there and darn few occasions with any contaminant.

Mine did this last summer. Wound up getting a replacement valve from Cummins, I think it was less than $15.
