What are the symptoms of a bad ECM or PCM. If you read my other posts you will see I have been troubles with power loss. Just changed VP twice last week cause I thought the one sent may have been bad as I read that has happened (hats off to MWFI awesome people, they overnighted replacment). The MAP was also change in the last year as has the Apps. I checked and adjusted it to the voltage on the back that was . 528 volts yesterday.

All this and still throwing codes and going in to limp mode. Help!!

Thanks, Brad

I had a bad ECM a few months ago. It would run fun for awhile and then start intermittantly cutting out... . felt kinda like a gasser did when it was running out of fuel except that it NEVER died. The pedal just would not respond. I can't remmeber the code #'s it was throwing but it was ALOT of them. I counted 12 at one point. There were several that were addressing 12volt supply at such and such a place was too high or too low.

I spent the money to have a cummins shop diagnose it. 3+ hours on the computer but they got it figured out.

If you decide that's what you need I would go with the company on E-bay out of florida. They were half the price of Chrysler for the same thing (a reman. unit) and they will program it to match your VIN. They also offer a lifetime warranty and were very fast in the shipping. Good luck. It took me over a month to get it all figured out and about 5 minutes of install time to fix it.

they were able to tell me that it was the ECM. they had one off of a core engine that they sold me for $300..... it was off of an auto transmission'd truck and the cruise didn't work. They would have loved to just let it go at that, but being here in Wyo where we can actually use the cruise on our highways I found that to be un-acceptable. So I had them take it off and bought the one from e-bay. VERY quick shipping and so far so good on the performance. the lifetime warranty makes a guy feel alot better about things too.

I once worked wit a guy who rebuilt those things (ECM's) and he said he put about $3 worth of componants in them. Funny how the price was still $500! Oh well, I'll take that over the $1100 from Chrysler

Yeah I hear ya on the price vs parts. I got one from auto computer exchange too, I just dunno why mine went out. Same thing as yours, a whole bunch of codes and the throttle was intermittent and then it'd spike... kinda embarassing to drive thru town because it sounded like you kept bumping the throttle.

I've had the same problem with a 98. the last pump ran for about a month. we're putting one on it right now. It had the 0216 code and suffered the dead pedal often. . maybe this is the problem. I think I also owe midwest an apology (lotsa rumors going around about what parts are replaced on rebuilt pumps and I bought into them for a while)

I bought my computer from Auto Computer Exchange. The unit they sent looked very dirty and used almost like they tested it and boxed it up. My unit with 255,000 looked like new compared to the one sent. After I put the replacement on all codes went away and truck ran great for one day and now I have the 1693 code on the odometer.

I recently bought one from them, with the same visual impression - looks like they bought a junkyard unit from a parted out wreck, re-boxed it, and sent it to me. It obviously had NOT been opened up by them for any repairs or replacement of "common failure components" as their web page claims, and no way to tell if they had even connected it to a diagnostic unit or loaded any programming into it...

However, it appears to be an EXACT duplicate for the one on my truck, actually has a later build date than the OEM one on my truck - and I installed it for a check, and it works perfectly - so far, so good - and the price wasn't bad - and no core required unless you want their "Lifetime warranty", which was of no value to me anyway, since this was only to be a spare - and they'll likely be out of business long before I'd ever need their warranty anyway... :-laf

I hope they don't go out of business... Mine has been working flawlessly since May but you never know... .

I had a much better experience with them. my unit was obviously used also but it was cleaned up and had new rebuilt stickers on it.

PO1693 means:

There is a a code in a companion module, that means the PCM is seeing a code in either the ECM,ABS,SRS,or BCM modules. You need to scan all the modules on the bus.

I just thought I would mention that I have a rebuilt VP-44 on my truck supplied by Midwest Injection.

Been on since the date in the sig, and so far it has performed as it should.

They ship on time, and in my case, a set of "1" injectors I ordered was received as just one injector. They over nighted me the other 5. You don't get any better than that.

That's interesting...

I bought a spare from them too and mine had most definitely been opened and then resealed using gray RTV. It was glass bead blasted after being resealed.

Just a guess, but I'll bet when they get the ECU's in they test them, and if they don't find any problems they simply ship them out. If a problem is discovered in testing, only then to they open them up and repair them.

I think we found our problem. seems that sometimes the fass would either lose prime or the bypass would stick open only pushing 1 psi-this is a fairly new fass but i think it may be the root of my problem. hope yours works out
