Today I got my truck back from the dealer; I originally took it on for a loud knock.

After checking the injectors and the fuel system they found them to be OK, they then checked the valves and found several loose (40k on the engine) after the adjustment the knock was still there.

They then proceeded to remove the head and found #4 piston damaged and several cylinder walls scored from possible overheating, the truck never got hot according to my gauges and I told them I used approximately 25 gallons of fuel for 120 miles towing my Toyhauler (about 4 mpg).

A Dodge rep. came down and they finally determined the injector on #4 piston had a constant drip and had overheated #4 piston and the adjacent cylinder walls and that caused the damage (my probe is located at #3 so the high egt's would not show up on my probe, per the Dodge rep. )

Bottom line a new Cummins diesel recon motor, covered under the Cummins 100k warranty.

Wow, that sounds like an amazingly straightforward admission of a defect on their part. Was there any resistance from Dodge or Cummins? After some of the dealer/warranty horror stories we've all heard it's nice to hear something good. Which dealer was it?

I didn't know you could pour enough fuel into the engine for it to get that low mpg's. But then, mine is a 12 valver.

Good to hear that Dodge took care of it...

Given the quote above, are you going to keep the EGT probe pre-turbo in the new engine?

It is pre turbo, but with the factory manifold split the way it is I could only tap it straight across from the 3rd cylinder back. So it really only monitors the first 3 cylinders.

Dodge or cummins never said anything about my turbo or exhaust system, they had to notice it because there are water lines to the Garrett Turbo's.
