Just receive my new (used) stock air box. With all the reading I've been doing with my basically stock truck I would be better off taking the Stage 2 off, selling it, and spend the money on a 4" exhaust with muffler. My question is which filter should I get for the stock box?

Thanks in advance

S&B's got an oiled drop-in available. They also offer a foolproof cleaning and re-oil kit. No more guessing.

I am not sure why you would want to remove the AFE Stage 2 and go back to the stocker and a drop in filter. The AFE is a much better flowing unit and will provide you with the protection you want. I have ran both of their unit on my 98 12v and loved them both. If you feel the oiled filter is a problem then just buy the new dry media filter for it and away you go. Its a tad more restrictive than a Mega-Cannon(or Inverted top) but it will out filter and flow any stock airbox... ... ..... Andy

After reading the article about intake systems (issue 59, p130), I've been kicking around the idea of going back to the stock airbox, too (with an AFE PG-7 drop in filter). They showed that there really isn't much hp difference between sucking hot air through a big filter or pulling cooler air through a smaller filter. In fact, the stock airbox WITH the stock side cowl duct and a drop-in PG-7 filter made a couple more hp than the stock box with the duct removed or the big conical AFE PG-7 alone. And that was on a ~400hp '99.

I'm not all that interested in picking up another 5hp or so, but to get the air filter out of the elements (it's been dusted pretty good with snow a few times) and maybe pick up a percent or two of milage might be worth the change for me.

Probably my biggest hang up about the change though, is that it would be the third "lifetime" filter I'd have bought for my truck...

I gave up shouting over the AFE open intake on my '99 and returned to the stocker w/AFE PG7. No difference at my hp level of 320 rwhp and 673 trq. in seat 'o the pants performance. S&B now offers a panel drop-in at half the cost of AFE. Their testing seems to confirm a quality product.

There is a reason we have interCOOLERS to cool the air, if we are taken in hot air from the engine were not helping the process. My current truck has never run good EGT always high. I'm hoping by going to the stock box and 4" exhaust is to lower the EGT. I probably will never be over 400hp and not looking for a good dyno run. I want the most reliable towing Dodge I can Build. And there is the added noise of the Stage 2.

One other thing that company, that we don't like to talk about(Banks) does do a lot of R&D, and I have talked to many RV'er on the road and they love their Banks Kit. Lots of power with no issues, stock air box.

After reading the article in issue 59, when someone would post about getting an BHAF I would site the real world performance of the stock box- good up to 500hp, but alas, old ways die slow. Some just have to spend big bucks for little or no improvement.

I like my AFE proguard 7 OEM style filter. It requires oiling and is cleanable and meets Cummins filtration requirements.

Very satisfied after going back to the stock airbox, reinstalling and sealing the oem snorkel, and adding the PSM cowl hole mod. (performed the mod a few months ago and not looking back. ) Using the Amsoil drop-in filter, and this setup is a keeper. Wish I had known this before spending hundreds of dollars on aftermarket intakes that did almost nothing to improve performance.

The truck runs as cool and snappy as it ever has, and on hot days you can hardly tell it by looking at the egt gauge.

Last fall, a buddy of mine installed the PSM system on his 3rd gen. He was satisfied enough to recommend it to me. This spring, I traded the K&N intake system that came on my truck for a stock airbox setup with a brand new AFE Progaurd 7 filter. I ordered and installed the PSM system. I don't have a EGT baseline to compare it to due to other changes made and the fact that I don't put many miles on the truck and when I do, it's rarely in the same conditions. To me, the only downside of the PSM system is the price... it's a little high... but not bad when compared to systems that don't perform as well even though they cost 3X as much. I was very pleased at the fit, finish, and overall quality. I also really like the sound. For me, the K&N was too loud and the stock airbox was too quiet. This setup is just right. Plus, it's a "sleeper" system. Nothing like something that outperforms fancy bling bling stuff, without anyone knowing it.

AFE has a new STI kit for the 2nd gens much Like the system for the 3rd gens. It is a sealed unit that flows great. I lost most the singing from the bigger turbo, still seems to spool as quick as the previous open system did. I haven't towed with it yet so I can't comment on that aspect.

Hey Sam,long time... ... ... .

The opening is to the Oem in the fender and the slot above the fender that shows in the pic. The tube appears to be the same as the stg 2 from a few years back, the housing is as big as what will fit.
