01 taurus Questions ??

A must see show if you like space.....

My friend has an old international 340 tractor with a diesel motor. It ran out of fuel (3 years ago) and would never restart. I have not looked at it myself. My friend says it is getting fuel to the injection pump but nothing is coming out. Is anyone familiar with this? I have to take a ride up to his house and look at it myself. If it winds up being the pump and we get a new one how do you set the timing on this tractor?

Thanks in advance

Intl Cub won't start

Place the throttle fully in wide open position and in short intervals

crank the eng. over, don't ruin the starter, probably wouldn't hurt to

open the fuel lines at the injector, although I'd try it without opening the

lines. If the battery is weak, jump it with your Cummins, engine running.

CHANGE FUEL FILTER FIRST. THE OLD FILTER IS LIKELY PLUGGED SINCE

IT LIKELY GOT ALL THE TRASH AND MOISTURE AS THE TANK RAN OUT.

LET US KNOW IF IT WORKS, IT ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME.

I had an International tractor,it was a B model[B meaning British] I had the the bosch injection pump rebuilt. If you don't turn over the engine after you pull the pump you should not have to retime it. The shaft had a taper to it so the worst you could do if you forced it on the wrong way, would be 180 degrees out. pull the pump turn 180 degrees and try again.
Try to get a shop manual, good luck.

IIRC, the International 340 Diesel used an International D166 4 cylinder engine with a Roosa-Master injection pump and glow plugs to assist starting. The glow plugs must be working properly for it to start even in warm weather.

I see you are in New York. It might be helpful to give these folks a call: Antiquetractorsrus - Kuhns Equipment Repair: Restored Antique Tractors and Parts I have no interest in the company and don't know anything about them.

Thanks for all the reply's. I went to his house yesterday and wound up pulling the pump. It was the Roosa. Had plenty of clean fuel going to it but had nothing coming out. while cranking it had no pressure on the test port on the bottom of the pump. also took the injector lines off at the pump and manually filled the ports no movement of fuel at all. He knows of some company in Albany that will go thru the pump for him. I set the motor a couple o degrees off of tdc insured that both timing marks were lined up on the pump and pulled it off. If I am right alll I have to do is make sure the marks are lined up when i put it back in.

Roosa Master??

Ididn't figure that the pump on an Intl would be a Roosa Master. Cases and others have them, however the thing that that always stopped

my Roosa Masters is the Check Valve (ball in a small assymbly). Varnish

or trash in the fuel will clog up and shut it down, also the disintergration

of the "O" rings will clog it. The Ck valve is on the top of the pump and

of course is the return line.

I never took one apart and dont want to unless i have to. Appearently at one point the fuel filter melted. My friends son told me it looked like it had been in acid so I am pretty sure itsgummed up somewhere in the pump. He found a pump rebuilder a year ago who said he would take it apart and check and repair what was broke vs just selling him a rebuilt one so we will let the pro's handle it for now. Thanks again for your help

The pump was shot. I put a rebuilt one in today. IT was a pain to bleed and I am unsure of the injectors. Anyway I got the air out and around 9 pm it wasnt running but was throwing alot of smoke out the exhaust. I told my buddy to let it sit and try it tomorrow. I think the lines i bled easy (2 of them ) flooded the cylinders while I worked on the other two. is this possible? Comments and Ideas please>

Are the glow plugs working? Without hot glow plugs, it will only puff smoke and not ignite the fuel. Push the glow plug button and hold it in for at least 2 minutes before cranking the engine, continue while cranking the engine, and hold the button until the smoke clears once the engine is running. You must have good batteries.

It probably would have been good to have the injectors checked at the pump shop.

Glow plugs are getting power. I didn't know the pump was loaded with crap until he got it back from the rebuilder and told me otherwise the injectors probably would have went up with it. How do the injectors come out? I pulled out the tube that the fuel line connects to and thats all it is a tube. I then took out the two bolts that hold down the rest of the injector but it didn't want to come out and since I don't have a clue I didn't want to pry to hard

Check each glow plug by disconnecting the harness and using an ohm meter to check for resistance. If it shows almost a direct short, they are probably OK. If no resistance, they are burned out. The engine has preignition cups in the head which is where the iginiton actually starts. The fuel is sprayed across the hot glow plug to start it. These engines don't start by the heat of compression only so a hot glow plug is necessary on each cylinder.

I'm working of my memory... it's been 25+ years since I've been around those tractors. After removing the two bolts, use upward pressure pressure on the injector flange with a rolling head pry bar while tapping on the sides of the flange to loosen it up, but don't get too rough on it.

The pump shop can clean and pop test the injectors to make sure they are opening at the correct pressure and atomizing the fuel.

Good luck!

She lives!!!!!!!!! Got the last of the air out and she fired up... .....

That's great news!

More than once, I've worked bleeding the air one day and let it set overnight and some how with the temperature changes and the gravity flow from the tank, it works the air out. The next day it will start.

I got another question now. Since we got her running the seals on the bucket and back hoe are leaking. I want to order up the seals but since i dont really know the model number or year I'm not sure how to proceed. there is a metal tag on the engine/transmission, but all it has a bunch of numbers. The manual he has for it is for a 340 and it looks the same. Baum hydraulics lists the 340 but I think it is called something else with the bucket and hoe attachement. If i posted a pic would it help me figuring out what it is

Do you have a local hydraulic shop? Someplace that rebuilds cylinders, motors, and pumps? Most hyd shops have seals. Just pull yours, and they can match them up. Or, if you're not up to it, they can rebuild them too. Seals are way cheaper than from the dealer too.

I'll look around a guy I know recomended baum hydraulics and the seals look like they are around $24. 00 per piston I was gonna do em myself. Its jjust a matter of me figuring out what I need. Good idea on checking out a local shop i will have to look around

If I remember correctly, the IH 340 had a Wagner backhoe on it. You should be able to order seal kits for the cylinders from a hydraulic shop. If they have a book, it would be under Wagner.
