Maybe you'll get lucky and just have a failed head gasket, causing steam (white smoke) from water getting in the cylinders, then got worse and started leaking oil.

Wishing you the best outcome.

Whatever it is, maybe it is an opportunity to make your motor better than stock (port the head, fire ring it, arp stud kit, whatever.

It makes for more power and effiency. Allows you to make more power and not have to worry about blowin a head gasket. That is if you are planning to make a lot of power with it.

removing high pressure injector lines

To remove injectors, I first need to remove the ceramic tube that the injectors attach to at the head. Do I need to remove the lines from the brackets holding them in place, or can I just pry them back a little? I know they are extreme high pressure and I don't want to kink them at all.

p. s. how much pressure are we talking in those lines when running anyway?

(I thought this should go here as I am still working out the same problem)

I cut the oil filter open to look for aluminum shavings/filings and found very little. (the cummins mechanic that I have been consulting said some is normal but with piston damage I will see massive amounts. ) I have the valve cover off and will continue today to remove the injectors and will have them tested. (see post below with my concerns for that. ) Good news for the oil leak... . I still haven't found the exaxct source but I have looked all over and can see no holes. The lack of major aluminum in the filter also tells me that I probably just had way too much fuel from an injector and really pressurized my crankcase and it forced all the oil out somewhere. Now I just have to find out where. Maybe the breather tube? all of the oil came from somewhere up front as the back side of the motor is fairly clean and the block on both sides are too. It just got into the fan and was blown all over engine compartment and hwy speeds blew it all over bottom side of motor and under-carriage.

I'm still hoping it's just my injectors!!

(praying)

then you have a bad injector or injector o-ring, hopefully if not than its something major, thats where you were getting oil out the breather probably, how far over is the oil?

The "oil" is right around the full mark... ... except that by now it's mostly diesel fuel! The #3 injector has a noticable hair-line crack running right through the tip and up both sides about 1/2". I'm guessing that's where the problem is. I am gonna send em all off and have them all pop tested in Salt Lake.

Keep ya posted!

I've got a set of stock injectors out of my 01 auto that I was saving to use as cores on a future set of F1's. Your welcome to use them until you get your injectors fixed. If your interested PM me and I'll find them(just moved) in the morning and get them to you tomorrow.

I've got an 01 w/180,000 miles that started missing and knocking white smoke and all. I had to ease it into town, cause it was twenty miles out in the middle of nowhere. It ran rough at idle. John Deere mechanic thought it could be injector. Made me feel a lot better. Eased to house and killed engine. Friend stopped by and I started truck to let him hear it. So was gonna wait till next morning and use heat gun to detect which injector was bad. WELL next morning truck would not start?? So we've ordered vp44, which I suspect is weak since it has showed the 0216 code for over 70,000 miles! Lift pump is working. VP44 is here and we will start work on it on monday I hope.

get a lift pump if you are using the factory setup, most likely your lift pump is getting weak and that is what killed the first pump will save you $$$$ in the long run, you can't tell if its bad or not by how quick it fills something, you need a gauge to watch the fuel pressure during normal driving and wide open throttle

Ditto, fuel pressure gauge is an absolute must for longevity of VP44. The gauge must be tapped into the inlet of the VP after the filter, not before.

I was thinking about pulling the head while I have the motor somewhat pulled apart and I have downtime. Also possibly fixing oil leak from the front end of motor. I hear that's a pull the radiator and intercooler job... . How hard is it to pulle the head since I'm already this far? It would be nice to check the piston heads to be sure there is no damage.

Also, how likely is it that all of that oil I lost was blown out the breather tube? If I was dumping strraight fuel into the cylinder would that have been enough to pressurize the crankcase and force oil through the breather, or do I have a leak somewhere else?

About 10 hours to pull head, clean, reinstall.

Oil leak on front? You mean front crank seal? Do not have to pull rad or intercooler for that.

Depends on how much fuel was dumped into oil pan whether it came out breather or somewhere else. Only way to find leaks is to get it running again. You could put injectors back in and then check for leaks before pulling head as it won't take very much time to do that.

Godspeed,
Trent
