I'm looking to take the fuel system on my '98 12-valve to the next level in order to more effectively burn DSE-style WVO. I'm wanting to add a secondary tank, smaller than the OEM tank, for 100% diesel for startup/warmup/shutdown. I thought Aero Tank or Transfer Flow made a tank to take the place of the spare tire but I wasn't able to find such a tank.

Since I have a shortbed I really don't want to put a tank there.

That's an old thread Eric, I don't remember seeing it before. Thanks for the link. Where did you find the tank? Also I'm not quite clear where you installed your fill, is it in the rocker panel behind the rear wheel?

Eric, if the fill hole was in the center near the edge I would think about setting up a filler neck accessible behind the license plate like my '68 Cougar. I'd think it would be fairly doable, get a spring-loaded plate holder, cut a hole behind it and wallah! clean and convenient.

My buddy is the West Marine manager at the Spokane branch & he'd get me the employee price on the tank.

The fill hole is on the top but at the end of the tank. . I guess that might work... I put a wood spacer to be able to have a Elbow connect to it. .

I guess if you did the same thing, just run the hose straight back to the plate. . I think it would have some down-hill to it but would still be a little slow because of the 90-deg elbow.

Then run the Feed hose to a regular pump and connect it to the Auxiliary (capped) port with a clamp. . this will feed from the bottom up on the main. . then Run the Vent wire from the tank to the vent fill line on the main tank. I ran a switch and a Gauge to the dash to transfer on the fly.

Here are some other tanks that have a angled edge for the fill

Vaughn, I feel your pain. . Had I known there are so many limitations in options for a shortbed, I would have made a longbed HIGH priority in the original purchase. Live n learn. .

Tank number 9398652 might be the ticket Eric.

I'll be doing a dedicated line from the second tank all the way to the injection pump since this will be a diesel-only tank to serve for warmup & shutdown purposes instead of increasing capacity.

I agree PRout more bed capacity would be nice, but for the most part I like the short bed so I can have the extra cab without a long wheelbase truck. Would still get the shorty if I had it to do over again, I love my truck :D

Vaughn,

Not sure if they would fit between the framerails on a 2nd gen but I have seen that some of the first gens have used a tank from a Ramcharger, the later ones came with a plastic tank. They are designed to go in that spot behind the rear axle.

When VW Golf/rabbit were around a lot of us had a 21gal. round tank that fit in their spare tire well. Maybe you could find one at a wrecking yard or still on line. Mine was made by a company called BEST tank co. Don't think that they are still in business.
