I am supposed to go and look at a 2001 2wd slt quad cab. The owner has sent pictures and the trucks bed and interior have really been worked over but the owner says he has kept up with all maintance and has records since new. The truck has 190,000 miles on it and he wants $3500. If it is a good running truck but beat to hell is this still a decent price?

Thanks for any input.

good price if a good truck, my experience is anyone who doesn't take care of the body and interior probably doesn't take care of the truck either, just my $0. 02

The truck belongs to the owner of a pool company. His work crew used it so that explains the dirty interior and I also know that getting things in and out of the bed is not done carefully with a construction crew. What do I need to look out for and what problematic areas do the 2001's have? I will go and test drive it and take a closer look this Saturday.

check all fluids see if any contamination check for codes. cycle the key on and off 3 times ending with the key turned on forward without starting truck codes will display on digital odometer. drive truck listen to the truck on shifts and how it shifts not usually hard fix. what the front of the turbo looks like. do you have a ctd already and this is will be a second one. there is really only so much you can do with out taken parts apart or really digging but for 3500 if it runs good sounds fine and doesnt shoot out oil everywhere for 3500 you could salvage parts on it and make more with just engine and trans and differentials I would think

The truck is for my father who needs a good workhorse for his small ranch. His little toyota just gave out on him with only 130,000 on the odomoter.

pull codes go from there is there is some death codes on the inje-pump or other tails of things your looking more money and repair and headache. it all up to what you want to put into if needed. do you know a mechanic that you trust that is has knowledge on these trucks have em do a look over shouldn't cost to much tell the owner to pay the bill or you go halfs with em.

I have a Smarty s06 for my 2006 Mega Cab. Will this read codes from a 2001?

You do not need a code reader for a 2001. Just hop in the driver seat and turn the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON and watch the odometer, it will spit out any codes that are stored.

On one side or either side of the block, driver side just below the vp towards the front of block, pas side just bleow oil cooler filter area. Could be on one side or both sides. The 53 have been cracking left and right. Mine and almost every 53 block I know of has cracked, most people dont even realize its cracked. And the dealers wont take a 53 block in on a trade.

Davcruz, In regards to the code reader ,Yes you do need a code reader for a 2001, the ignition switch on off x3 only will read certain codes, so dont be fooled get a real code reader.
