My 04. 5 w/ 48RE has started to shift late ~ 2200-2600 from 1st to 2nd and again from 2nd to 3rd without a load and not under heavy acceleration. It also shifts hard when downshifting 3rd to 2nd and again from 2nd to 1st. It tends to do it when its warm and has been shut off for a short period. The trans and motor are stock. I took the pickup to a local transmission shop -- seems pretty sharp. He thought it could be the governor solenoid but couldn't get it to throw any codes and couldn't replicate the problem. The truck has 118,000 on it.

Anybody else run into this or have any ideas? I'm debating on taking it to a dealership to see if their equipment will pull a code, but don't have a lot of confidence in any of the area dealerships.

Appreciate any info or suggestions.

If you even SUSPECT a governor pressure problem, change the solenoid and transducer before chasing problems. They will NOT throw codes and still cause problems and all sorts of weird things, incluidng intermittent loss of OD.

The electronic throttle valve actuator is probably stuck/sticking. have them check it for full sweep/proper operation 1st. It could be the electronics though, but i've replaced a couple TVA's for symptoms like that.

yes, but he hasn't had it checked for codes. I was suggesting a visual check on the TVA, it's quick and free. just something else to think about.

" He thought it could be the governor solenoid but couldn't get it to throw any codes "

I think that means he checked it for codes. ;)

A visual inspection will tell you nothing about whether its working correctly or not.

Even if it is working and not throwing codes, it could still be causing issues due to binding. That is a bit of a trick to verify.

Changing the electronics first is the easiest way to start the process as they are problematic.
