3 % by volume in a Diesel engine is "EXCESSIVE" and will dilute the oil, so the Viscosity is affected. When the Viscosity lowers by 2 SAE/ISO grades, the oil should be changed! Soot will not lower the Viscosity, but it will increase the Viscosity.
If I had 3% fuel dilution im my oil, I would get it out, and find out why the fuel is getting in the oil. Fuel contamination is definately going to increase wear in the engine.
