I had an exciting week last week and now have 2 blown up commonrails. One is an 05 and the other is an 03 HO. I had another complete engine to drop in my 05 but now Ive got the engine out of my 03 and Im considering using the 05 block and head for the 03 due to the better piston coolers and the 05 head is not stock. Anyone ever tried doing this and had any luck? I assume Ill have to change out the wiring and sensors and injectors. Also the 05 motor spun the bearings on the crank and the 03 had a valve seat drop so are the crankshafts the same in both motors? Im not looking to make huge power out of my 03 because its just a trailer towing rig and hauls home groceries and my gf drives it mostly but if I can use the 05 motor in it I might as well have the upgraded items like piston coolers and ported head.

TIA, Chris

As long as you match the pistons and injectors across the years it should all work fine. The internals and piston cooling should be the same on both as are the rest of the parts I believe.

You might ping lmills or give Mid-Atlantic diesel a call to just verify everything as I think he has mixed and matched before. :)
