How in sam hale do yo get the rotor off to change the parking brake pads out on a 2002? I removed the bracket that the caliper attaches to, and figured I would slide the rotor off. Uhhh no. Sprayed a little pb blaster and gave it a few taps. Nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Do you have a 3/4 or 1-ton? The rotor should tap off on a 3/4. However, duallies need to have the axle and hub removed to get to the p-brake shoes.
 
Sorry I was thinking of another application of the D80.



They are two piece units. It should split and come off where it goes on the hub where the lug bolts come through it. You can heat the area around the lug bolts to help expand it and beat on it in that area also that is what I have done in the past to break the rust adhesion. You will need to hit it pretty hard to get it to come loose sometimes.

I have a 3/4 ton. Now I am confused:confused: Bill says I have to pull the hub, but pc says the rotor should beat right off:-laf!
 
Make sure your parking break isn't set. I was dumb enough to beat on my rotor trying to get it off with the break set. I ruined the rotor before i realized i had the break set. Released the break and it slid right off... oops!

According to the service manual, *without* dual rear wheels you DO NOT need to remove the axle shaft.



Now I've never had to remove the rear rotors on my truck (yet), but according to the service manual all you need to do is remove the brake caliper and caliper support bracket. If you've done that and the rotor won't easily come off, is it possible you:



1. Have spring washers on some of the wheel studs? These are installed at the factory to keep the rotor stuck on the axle and need to be cut away before the rotor can slide off the studs.



or



2. Is it possible the parking brake shoes are catching a groove worn inside the rotor? If so, maybe you need to release tension on the parking brake cable to allow the parking brake shoes to retract?

Bill- I was just re reading this before heading over to the shop. I scrolled down and reread your post. :confused: I was like "Thats not what it said earlier"!! I had to look around to see if I had my whiskey out a little early on Monday.



I think I am going to try and back off the parking brake adjusters tap the rotor off. They probably are hung up on a groove in there. I have never heard of spring washers, but I don't think I have any. Let y'all know howit goes later today.



BTW- Does anyone know the what the minimum thickness of the rotors? I couldn't find it anywhere.

The spring washers talked about are on the studs against the rotor/drum. If it was hanging up on ridges in the drum it would still move so I don't think you have it broke loose from the rust yet.

The minimum thickness limit will be cast directly into the rotor by the manufacturer. You'll see it when you get the rotor off.
