Can I replace my dead RV refrigerator with a standard refrigerator?

Just curious

I would like opinions on 5th wheel pin box upgrades that people are using. I've looked at 5th airborne, mor-ryde etc, but would real world users opinions on the different pinboxes. Which ones eliminate the banging and front/rear jerking the best? Reliablility issues if any? TIA, Marc.

PS - I'll be pulling a Northshore 33XRV once it shows up next month!!

The DEMCO Glide Ride was selected by the staff of NuWa Industries, manufacturer of the HitchHiker Champagne and HitchHiker Discover America product lines to be installed as standard factory equipment on all 2007 and subsequent models of NuWa fifth wheel trailers.

My 2007 HitchHiker DA came with the Demco pinbox as standard equipment. I have towed it a little more than 20,000 miles so far and I am impressed with the way the Demco eliminates the chucking motion so common with fifth wheel travel trailers.

I towed hundreds of fifth wheel and conventional travel trailers during three years and 400,000 miles pulling trailers commercially as an RV transporter from 2005 through 2007.

I can honestly say that none including some very high priced Travel Supremes, Tetons, Alfas, Holiday Ramblers, and numerous Keystone, Thor, Forest River, Cherokee, Weekend Warriers, and other lesser known brands, some with air bag kingpins, towed as smoothly as my own HH with a Demco hitch.

I you're looking for a good one at a discounted price, I happen to have a brand new take off Demco Glide Ride hitch for sale. It was removed from a new HitchHiker fifth wheel by my local dealer because the buyer owned a SWB pickup and needed an extended kingpin box.

Although I only have 500 miles on it, an Air-Ride (similar to an airborne) made a world of difference in my jarring... it took away both the chunking and the bounce, but my camper is fairly light at 5k.

Harvey, I may be interested. I have an 08 Arctic Fox 5er. Will it fit and would it effect my warranty? Send me an email or PM me with a price. george

Marc,

I have the 5th airborne air-ride sidewinder. My trailer is a 15K toyhauler with 3 axles. Had always had a bounce on the truck til I got the 5th airborne.

The air-ride part has a pivot lift so as it goes up and down, it also goes front to rear a little. I look in the mirror to see the trailer go up and down. . Don't have any bounce or chucking even on rough 2 lane roads.

Go to www.tlcentral.com and if you order it, put in the discount code ... . 5th... . (not the dots, just 5th)... for 10% off. Just got an E-mail message for this.

I have had a 5th Airbirne on my 15k toyhauler for 2 years, no problems at all. Made a HUGE difference in ride quality. One of those things you wont go without after you use it... . like my Pacbrake too!!

George,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I didn't see your post until now.

Demco makes the Glide-Ride in several kingpin box widths to accomodate the frame "brackets" of various manufacturers. The Demco I have was made for a HitchHiker Champagne and is 12" wide outside edge to outside edge.

I had it listed on the TDR classified ads at $400 but I'll take $300 for it if it will fit your trailer. It's not doing me any good sitting in my garage.

Whether you buy my Demco or not, I wholeheartedly recommend a Demco Glide-Ride to anyone with a fifth wheel trailer.

You can observe the operation of the Demco mounted in a good Dodge-Cummins pickup towing a HitchHiker trailer in a video on the NuWa Industries, Inc. website.

On edit: NO, it should have no effect on the frame warranty of your Artic Fox. The Demco simply slips into the existing factory brackets provided by the manufacturer to mount whatever pinbox the trailer was originally equipped with. It doesn't place any additional or unusual stresses on your frame.

Harvey,

Do you have any schematics on the hitch? I am thinking about modifying my Reese 30k base and incorporating the glide ride into it.

Dave

Thanks for all the replies. I also have a short box truck and am in the process of researching pin box lengths. Once the trailer arrives I also need to measure the pin box on it again to see where everything sits.

Has anyone tried the Air Safe in-bed hitch? We bought one and so far it has been less than expected. Things seem to bind rather than glide smoothly in the guides so I was wondering if others have had similar experience. I'm not trying to hijack the thread as it was along the air ride topic. Thanks

I have a Trail-Air on my HR. Have towed with this unit for nearly 25,000 miles. This is big ride inprovement for both the trailer and the truck! I have people ask me about it all the time. The people at Trail-Air are very helpful in fitting you with the correct setup, and they have been around for a long time! The nice thing about the system is that you can adjust the air bag to be stiffer or softer as you see fit. But you may not notice much differance. Trail-Air also makes an equalizer that replaces the original one on your trailer. This also will improve the ride on the trailer. This is standard on HR, Mckenize and many of trailers. The nice think about this item is that it is not that expensive, It is simple, and does a nice job. Good luck finding the right one for you.

I thank all for the replies, very informative. I am now back to looking for a new trailer, new trailer I had brought in suddenly had a $16000 increase due to "the dollar going bad". It was $43 when I ordered it, and $59 when it got here #@$%!. So now I get to look some more. Getting kind of sick of it now actually: the RV show is at the end of January, maybe I can find something reasonable then. Either that or I keep my slide in:rolleyes:
