I received the BD Super "B" Special single turbo that I ordered today. Opened the Box and I am surprized at the size of it. The truck is an 04. 5 QC LB 2WD Banks intake (filter, intercooler, manifold) intake heater delete. FASS 95/150, Modified fuel rail (wild), smarty #7, with predator plug in chip, muffler delete, ATS in the transmission. NOW the big Question. O. K. to install or return it and get the smaller Super "B" turbo? I do plan more but will be a while and then again may be this will be it with the economy in the tank. The truck is used daily at approx. 7500 to 8000 lbs. 550 miles a week. I never had it on the dyno so I'm not sure what it 's putting out to the wheels. Help please! bought to lessen the smoke but, don't want to go backwards

the smaller Super "B" is smaller than your stock turbo, so no, I wouldn't waste your money on that

That not be true. The inducer is larger and it is based on an S3000 extended tip turbine design. Spool is supposed to be as good as stock with the ability to support up to 500 HP and 45-50 psi.

That would be a step up from a stocker. Should be a good all around turbo if you rnot going for big power.

When you say you want to lessen smoke do you mean at top boost or during acceleration? The Smarty PoD will take care of the acceleration part pretty well but you do lose a little "kick" when trying to control smoke (but it is adjustable on the fly ;) ) With the smarty on #9, 100% I get smoke during spool but it clears pretty well at full boost. With the smarty on #9, 70% I just a light puff until it spools-up.

the inducer is a 57mm... 04. 5+ turbos are 60mm inducer. I wouldn't want to run 500hp on a 57mm inducer, I don't care how extended the tip is! :)

According to BD the inducer is a 62mm on and S3000 turbine which should be a 71mm (I think) exducer for a BD Super "B" Special. This should be fairly comparable to II's phat shaft series and HTT's street stocker turbos.

Where are you getting 57mm from?

i believe the super b is 57mm, but you are correct in the fact that the extended tip make all the difference in the world. while the stock turbo is efficent to about 32-34psi. the Super B is efficent to 38-40. just because it's smaller doesn't mean it's less performance.

imo the Special will be fine for you, i know many people running a 64mm on daily drivers and towing. also you will be good to upgrade to some bigger injectors down the road and you won't have to upgrade your turbo.

yea that's the special, i was refering to the super b. the special is more equivelent to a 66mm b/c of the tip design.

The special is what the OP was referencing in his original post. Forest was talking about the Super B (I think) and I was pointing out that is not what was being discussed in the first post. :)

For all intents of the OP, I believe it should be a good turbo for his needs.

Hey guys I installed it WELL O. K. My son installed it with some help from the old guy. And I can say that it is a little big, but still very driveable. Did it help the smoke WELL NO! with the slower spool up the "stand on it " is not a good idea the cars behind you do not like it. I can only get about 38 psi max so far. I can hold 35 psi straight through 100 mph and not exceed 1250 on the egt. With the predator off it will list An 0234 code but not set off the mil light. I do like but the smoke is my biggest concern. In California the Smoke Gods are every where and I do not want to be one that is used to make the statement. any help here would be great Thank to all of you.

I'm afraid thats going to be the trade off with that size turbo. So, does it at least clear up the smoke after it lights? Also, have you played with the boost elbow some? I'm sure you mean 1150 egts right?

yes that was a typo 1250 egt. sorry! of coarse 2150 I would need more than advise on the turbo. play with the boost elbow no! are there adjustments and would the upgrade codes from Smarty help I currently have the orginal 4. 06 version do I go for the aftermarket turbo version or just do the latest update.

you can change the version on the smarty that might help a bit. you can adjust the wastegate actuator and get more boost out of it. if you shorten the rod it will increase the boost. it's tight in there so you may need to just take the wastegate actuator off, once you shorten it you will need to put a small amount of air to the tube to get the rod to extend far enough to get it back on the exhaust housing. 35 psi is good though, i would say with the fuel you have you are good to about 40.
