Dear Friends - I have a 98. 5 quad cab 47re automatic and rubbed a hole in the steel line from the transmission to the cooler up front. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? Thanks

cut at the ends and replace with transmission quality rubber line or go broke with the dealer replacement lines that gave you the problem in the first place. Ed

If I remember correctly they had an issue with that truck and the factory replacement had some rubber put into it for exactly this reason and to absorb vibration. it would be much cheaper to fix as per ed9824v and just keep your eye on it for awhile

You can also take it to a hydraulic hose shop and have a hose made for it... what I did because they were also prone to cracking where they exit the trans.

IIRC, took a hose right at 5-feet in length...

You really don't need to get hydraulic hose with fittings made. There is very little pressure in the transmission cooler lines so barbed fittings will work fine. The hose has to be able to be used with hot oil.

If you have one crack, you will understand...

Not to mention good luck finding the fittings to fit...

All the fittings are NPT so finding barbed fittings is no problem. The front where the lines connect to the cooler is hose with clamps already. I have used hoses on mine for years with no problems. I bought my hose at a local hydraulic shop.

Then you had a different line, mine was a solid, single-piece hardline with fittings on both ends. Neither end was an NPT fitting... the connections were metric on mine... it took him over an hour of searching to find the right fitting to put on the hose.

It also cracked (several times mind you) right near the trans where it exited and turned near 180*.

And yes, it was a factory line... I had one brazed and one was ordered new from Dodge.

The transmission and the cooler under the manifold are tapped to NPT on my 47RH and on the 47RE transmissions I have had anything to do with. So I use NPT fittings and eliminate everything to do with the stock lines. This picture shows how I have my transmission temp sending unit installed in a T fitting for the front cooler line.

I believe it's 1/2 inch hard line. You might be able to put in a brass compression fitting and have it work fine. Just buy a splice and put it in.

What and where rubbed the hole in your line?

I would like to take a look at mine to see if I need to add any protection,or move something.

If it were mine, I would cut the line (each side of crack with a pipe cutter), inst. correct type, size, quality hose, and double hose clamp it at each end.

Good Luck, Ray

Compression fittings do work. Normally the place where the hole is rubbed in the line is where the two cross over in front of the transmission pan. When I replaced the steel lines with hose I have only one line that crosses over. There is really no need for both lines to cross over. The one that does not go the the cooler under the manifold can go directly to the front and connect to the radiator type cooler without the cross over.
