Coming out of Knoxville tn. yesterday and check engine light came on. Cycled key and found P042e, which isn't on the list I had, so went to Advance Auto Parts and they hooked up their code reader and showed same code, with text saying ( I think) secondary emission control. Does anyone know what this is in reference to? I had them clear code and drove home about 400 miles afterward without it coming back. I haven't driven it today to see if it comes back on with another cold start.

P042E is "EGR control stuck open"... dealership should clean your EGR valve and that should fix it, the valve has excess soot which is not allowing it to close all the way.

Larry, if the EGR is stuck open it will really build up the soot. Have the dealer clean it, then lay it on it's back side and fill one chamber with the EGR cleaner (the water based quart) and if the cleaner comes out into any other port it is still leaking and should be replaced.

Cycle the key?

I had an 01 5. 9 - and you could turn on and off the key to get the code. My dealer tells me that the 07. 5 (6. 7L) does not have that option. Was Larry perhaps referring to his 01 truck or do the 07. 5's have that option and my dealer is not up to speed? I tried to turn it 10 times with no success. Any help is appreciated. My check engine light has come on 15 times in the last 5000 miles. The truck runs fine and the one time I took it in they said it was a false code. Okay, I accept that, but 15 friggin times?

Thanks in advance.

I too had heard that the new trucks couldn't get the code by turning the key off and on, but I tried it anyhow, on 2 occasions no less and got the same code they read off the code reader. I used the same method as we used on the '01.

Your dealer has the same misunderstanding that a few early 6. 7 owners on the TDR had. The new trucks will display the codes just like the earlier ones did.

The ignition switch must be turned from off to on to off quickly three times i succession.
