Has anyone tryed replacing the factory radiator fan with a Flex Fan? I see their advertisement and they claim 3-4 mpg savings. If you have please give some input as to temperature change if any, mpg savings if any, and any other observations. I tried one on my Mustang and i found the factory fan and clutch to work the best unless you are revving above 6,500. Thank you.

Ive heard someone Removing the fan all together, but never indicated they used an Electric, said they were always running highway and that there never was a need for the fan?

Try it and let us know if any MPG Gains...

Had one on my silverado to remove the factory fan ,but as i understand from flex is that it is not to be used a stand alone system on our cummins trucks i dont see how it could hurt . I think its a great extra cooling fan to have if you do alot of idle time in hot weather. they use the same ad slogan for all there ads about mpg savings but without removing the factory unit and the extra load on the motor i dont see how it could just my . 02ct

I am really sceptical of any claim the stock fan can be improved. Maybe with an adtitional electric, but mine has never needed any help. In the past, any flex fan I tried was a milelage decreaser.

I will definitely not run my truck without a fan. Its there for a reason. I wonder if you would get any MPG increase by taking out the altenator? LOL Just kidding.

I'm almost positive that it replaces your stock fan clutch assembly and takes the load off, and thats how you get the MPG increase, but i never tryed it on a diesel. When i installed it on my mustang it actualy ran 15 degrees hotter.

Where do I start. Let me start with I do have a flex a lite on my 99 model ( and has been on there for over a year). It does get better gas mileage. I get more like 1-1. 5 mpg, but, let me say that I do mostly city driving with oversized tires and 3. 55's. Flex a lite also says that it is not rated for pulling over a certain G. C. W. R ( mine was 18000). I've gotten around ( and coincidently, it also helped with controlling temp. at idle). When I wired it up, I had the fan kick on one of two ways---1) when the A/C clutch kicked on; 2) with the temperature sensor that flex a lite packed with it. When you are empty, it does fine just kicking on with the a/c clutch, but, if you do not have the a/c unit on, or are working the engine hard---the flex a lite temp. sensor isn't worth ten cents! I worked around that by wiring it like I would run the sensor, but instead, ran the wires to a toggle switch under the steering wheel. If I am working the engine (one would generally know when this is), I flip the toggle switch and leave the fan on all the time, otherwise, I let the a/c clutch do its job.

Sounds like it works with some tinkering. Thnx.

When Dodge was selling the Horton Mopar electric fan I had one installed on my truck 1994 12 valve 2500 4X4 when it went bad had a hell of a time to find another Horton Mopar fan, Thanks to Mr Bob he got one for me. Does help with MPG every little bit helps!

I miss my Horton too. When my trans mount bracket let go during a race the fan kissed the radiator killing both. The horton was either on 100% or off 100%

I saw a good mpg gain with it. You could also over ride the temp sensor and a/c pressure switch with an in cab rocker switch,It came with a very high quality wiring harness. sensors and switches. I still have all the wiring and sensors installed. Maybe some day try the electric fan set up using the Horton controls.

it doesn't take long to pull the fan... it's there to cool. if you don't need the cooling, you don't need the fan.

3rd gen fans have electronic clutches.

flexalite fans don't cool near as well as the factory setup

I am not real impressed with the 3rd gen fans. Too complicated and expensive, also never fully locked or free wheeling. I wish the Horton would have made it instead.

gas mileage? :(

I'm cornfused...

Are we talking about an ELECTRIC FAN or the actual replacement FLEX FAN that goes in place of a stocker?

Maybe I'm showing my age, but they did make a flex fan that was extremely light and had blades that flexed at high RPM to gain HP...

??

They did make one( i tried it and it didn't keep my car cool)but the one that is being advertised for our trucks is an electric version.

Hey cArNiVaLwOrKeR,

I noticed you corrected someone when they put down GAS mileage. Thought you might like to change your Sig stating you have Mach IIIIs. Don't you mean Mach IVs? Just asking, I could be wrong.

Thanks for all replies. I did some research and found that i will not be installing one. 04. 5 and up trucks have electric fan clutches which do not operate at full speed at normal temps. and really don't use much juice. I guess you would loose the wait of the fan, but from the testimonials i've read there is very minimal if any mileage increase, if you pull a trailer it does not cool sufficiently, but it does look and sound cool. I guess i'll stick to the factory set up for now.

In all Fairness, you are only able to get Gas Mileage from a Gasser,

However, I did use, MACH IIII's purposefully to Max out the available charachter lenght.

These are both Technicalities, and I'm very glad we have undercover grammar policing, correcting the corrector, I really hope you never need correcting :)

Bravo... job well done...
