I remember seeing a thread about someone doing a conversion and they went with a GM alternator or what is called a "single wire" alternator I think. I posted to the thread about my 6V to 12V conversion on my old Oliver tractor that used that alternator. I'll try a search.
Go to your local alt shop and ask for Transpro # in8315 or 230-52049 this is a voltage regulator for nipindenso alts. This made just for this applaciation. fits under the cover has two wires bolts on to the two small studs and makes your alt a onewire. Dont remember how much under 40 i belive.
I have noticed with my truck that when you stop at a traffic light or stop sign with the lights on the voltage drops below 14, probably closer to 12 volts and I notice the lights looking dimmer. When you take off or rev the engine up the voltage comes up but slowly. Is this normal or should I be looking at doing a regulator conversion? Also on the external voltage regulator what wireing changes need to be made?

If it's cold, say below 30*, it's probably your grid heaters coming on. Watch your volt meter and see if it cycles on and off before you take off. Nothing to worry about.
With my set up I got a voltage reg from a 93 dogde diesel and went to an auto wrecker and pulled the wiring harness from an 80s dodge car. The regulator is that same old rectangle box with the triangle plug that dodge has used since the 60s. But I have a 6speed in mine and do not need the PCM for anything. The reg is about $50 and I think i paid a dollar for the harness. But you can pretty much use any voltage reg you want, first one I had on there was one from an 80s Ford pick-up and it was $20 from napa.
I did have the batteries load tested and the shop that did it commented on the "non-aggressive" charging system. It might be my alternator, I just didn't know if this was the way these things were. Is there a way to test the alternator without taking it somewhere?
