Left the house today at 30°F with lite snow after a mist to head the the Lowes in Wareham the next town over. Came out to find BOTH side mirrors had split vertically at the same place in the same manner!! Nobody did this its too perfect!! I know I'm looking at replacements but has anyone had this happen like this - two at the same time without any shock (I never opened passengers door. Would Cipa's be a better choice?? Thanks, signed fly-eye!!

If you are going to replace your mirrors, I would suggest the Kool-Vue ones (they are the flip out type tow mirrors). Available on e-bay relatively cheap and bolt right up, work just fine. Otherwise just try and get a set of used mirrors, I'm sure they're out there with all the guys that have upgraded recently.
On edit: you can usually get replacement glass for them relatively cheap at most windshield repair places.

That happened to me a couple of years ago under similar temperatures (just below freezing). I turned on the mirror heaters and a couple of minutes later CRACK. The dealer had replacement mirrors for around $30 each. They just snap on.

I will never use the heated mirrors again! The morning I made that fatal mistake there was a quarter inch layer of ice covering the glass. Now I just chip it off. I like two rearward mirrors not four.

Thanks for the 411 Road Dog, have both mirror glasses due in Wed - $27 for drivers and $37 for passengers (perspective glass) and the parts guy (reliable) concurs - they snap in. Much cheaper than new mounts!!!

A brief update since this is NOT covered in the service manual: the mirror "lenses" connect with 2 small blade q/d connectors for the heater, and have a ring of snap tabs that grasp a corresponding mount on the pivot motors. New drivers lense has no shake - so I wonder if the elements were uncemented from the mounts??
