Thread Hi Jack in the Guns Board:
Strange argument. How is the NRA not a special interest?
What government organization is Anti-American?
What exactly is a tree hugger, and how is a tree hugger a bad thing? Have you ever been on the side of a mountain that was completely clear cut and had massive erosion due to no ground cover?
PETA? They are extreme, and I disagree with most of what they say, but they do have a few reasonable arguments about ethical treatment of animals. And yep I eat animals and yep I raise chickens for their eggs and their tasty flesh.
I've not yet seen any evidence that Obama wants to strip away our rights, including the right to bear arms. Show me evidence of legislation or words coming out Obama's mouth. And kindly don't just give me a link to a WingNut Website that is just mouthing lies.
On the other hand I live in a town that has lots of gangster teenagers who seem bent on killing each other with handguns, and semi auto assault rifles and from the sound of the gun fire, occasionally fully automatic weapons. Sometimes innocent children and adults get in the way and they die too. Should gangster teenagers have the right to bear arms when all they use them for is assassinating their peers? If not, then how do we prevent them from getting firearms and keep them from using them to kill other teenagers?
Take back who's government? Frankly I'm glad Obama is in office after eight years of Bush coinciding with 6 years of Republicans running Congress. They didn't exactly do a good job.

GulDam, You are not thread hijacking, just expressing your opinion, based on your observations. However you are mistaken in several important areas.
#1. The 2nd Amendment to the Bill of Rights does not extend to those involved in criminal activity, have been convicted of a felony, it never has. Having domestic restraints filed is a recent addition to that list. This is a law enforcement issue, not a Rights issue.
#2. Automatic weapons in the hands of criminals is also a law enforcement issue. THe Law abiding citizen must apply for, pass a background check and pay a huge fee to be able to purchase an automatic weapon (machinegun) that is limited to those produced before May, 1989. In other words collectors pieces. Anything manufactured after that date is reserved for Military and police purposes. An assault weapon is a Machinegun! Not a semiautomatic lookalike!
#3. This a huge issue. President (Senator) Obama has signed on to every anti-gun legislation that passed his way while in the Senate. The Democratic Party platform has historically supported strict gun control. While that language has been toned down with the recent Supreme Court Decision in Heller vs. D. C. , The U. N. Mandates and the Democratic Party extremists still have total removal of weapons from the citizenry as their goal. I can substantiate this through historical data on office holders and U. N. documents.
#4. The NRA is an organization of people, just like you and I that take umbrage at the thought of being dictated to by political mandates. We are no different than a Union, bargaining for better wages and benefits for our families. In this case,we are preserving the original intent of the 2nd Amendment. It isnt about hunting, BTW
#5 War and human casualties are a horrible thing. I served as a Marine in Vietnam, two tours. War at home with criminal activity is a disgusting nightmare that must be dealt with by firm law enforcement and citizens not willing to be bullied.
I hope this has address some of your concern. I know it hasn't changed your present situation. Please feel free to ask questions. If we can discuss this in a mutually respectful manner, I would be glad to continue. GregH
PS. Tree huggers? While I believe that environmental issues require common sense and good stewardship of resources, there are those that are extremists in that area also. I could tell you stories about getting a septic system repaired that would make you wonder about about real science vs junk science!
