So I'm coming very close to the 200k mile mark on my stock 48 auto. I MIGHT be doing a cross country road trip and then back towing a 5-6k lb sailboat. What I'm thinking is a TC and valvebody, deep pan with a AirDog and pyro and transmission gauges? I spoke with DTT which recomended just TC VB and a rough cost of about 2. 5K said and done. Then spoke with a local shop that deals with suncoast and goerend. They recommended and quoted a full rebuild using goerend parts. My question is do I really need to go full rebuild? If I went full go I'd really want to do full billet. I just cant afford that. I dont have any major bombs coming and really dont tow much at all. WAY down the road I'll be doing a tuner some mild injectors turbo upgrades etc, again nothing too crazy. If I dont do this trip I will leave well enough alone until I can fund the full billet route. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Don't waste your money on full billet, the way you drive and mild mods you don't need it. I've heard stories that the stock intermediate shaft was holding up better than some billets. I would recommend the billet input though.

With that many miles if your dropping the trans for a converter install you should go through the whole trans. Half the work of the rebuild is the R+R. You could however upgrade the valvebody now and reuse that when you get around to doing the rebuild.

ts a question with the BDTD and how you have been using it. The 200k on a stock trans and added power would be a major concern for me as the stock setup just will not take a lot of power and towing. A TC, shift kit, a billet lever and servo cover will do wonders but if it has started the direct clutches slipping its only a matter of time before it gives up.

Since you have to drop the trans definitely check the clutch packs and update sealing rings on the pump and go from there. The stock pieces are good for a lot IF you get the trans setup correctly and the pressures up. Depending on the shop you should be able to get a full rebuild with the needed pices between $2500-$3000.

FWIW, a billet input is the only thing to consider unless you want to race or pull, and, even then only if you want to do locked shifts at high power. :)

Brown's Diesel

Brown's Diesel is a Goerend distributor/dealer. They are in Central Ca. You might give them a buzz on Monday. They quoted me about $3700 installed for a completely rebuilt 48re w/Goerend parts to hold 400-450- rwhp. Nice guys. He took a lot of time describing what he'd do. That quote was for a friend's 4wd '05. Richard's the contact person. They have a stellar reputation.
