Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Super "B" Turbo Question

My 2001 24V has developed an oil leak at the front cover. If I find it necessary to replace the rear gasket is it necessary to remove the timing gears and if so how are they timed?

Nope, no gears involved, but if your in there you might want to put that Killer Dowl pin kit on for peice of mind. Easy task, but takes some time to pull everything out just to get to the cover.

If you want to replace the gasket on the timing gear CASE then yes, you will need to remove the gears, including the camshaft. Great time to stick a better cam in there!

As for timing marks, I'm sure someone around here has a picture but I would bet you could simply bar the engine
over with the front cover off and align the marks before disassembly.

Godspeed,
Trent

Not sure what you mean here? Why would you relace the "rear gasket" if you have a "front cover" leak:confused:

If you have an oil leak that is dripping off the bottom of the gear cover you most likley have a front seal leak. Pull the cover and place the seal. No gears need to be removed.

Check the Tappet cover gasket, that dries up and is a bear the get to!

Yep... gotta pull the fuel pump to fix a side cover leak... Major PITA just to fix a leak. When I rebuilt my engine I added silicone to the rubber gasket just to make sure...

Hey monkeyman and cliffman,

can you give me an approximate number and or location of the bolts holding the side cover on? or is it just siliconed on? I'm fighting what I suspect this sidecover leak.

Thanks,ph

To change tappet cover you have to remove injection pump, intake, and stock fuel filter if you have it. Short cuts will have it start leaking again Usually the gasket gets brittle and drys up, leak goes down side of engine in rear or front, hard to see where it comes from. ECM bolts to front of cover. A trick is to clean cover really well, use 3M Weather strip adhesive and glue it on edge. Gasket only goes on one way, read label. The factory service manual for my year 2002 does not even show the tappet cover. You can only see part of cover with all the stuff in the way.

Monkeyman, are you sure about the intake??? I think you can squeez it off without having to pull the intake. In the attached pics you can see the tappet cover between the pump and the fuel filter. You'll definitely have to pull the pump, filter and the ECM to get to the cover. Good luck…

I took off everything because the tappet cover runs behind VP44, to me it was much easier to just yank everything. Sure it took a lot of time to pull lines etc, but that made sure there would be no leaks. Pulling the intake to me is the easy part! My friend did it the fast way, and it started leaking two weeks latter. Plus I wanted to tighten all the bolts equal. I mean after injector lines are off, pulling VP takes five minutes!
