Any replacement OEM sized clutch for the 4500 tears out the center section. Upgrade to the 13" and be done with it once. I will vote for SBC. .

That's why I have the Valair HD center. 2 years of 3rd gear burnouts, trailer towing, and daily driving and nary a problem.

Yup. . Most of the "other" brands are the same until one day its leaving you on the mountain side. I know of one clutch that lasted 4 years and over 100,000 miles before the center let go. . Good luck. .

The price is the same now a days for a good 13" with flywheel and dual disk, why bother with an OEM sizeddisk?

Valair also has the 13" conversions and if I was doing it now I would probably look into them. The performance 13" clutches are built on the same disc hub as the 12. 25 performance clutches. I believe the performance hub that Valair uses is a Borg Warner, but no matter who makes it I have NO DOUBT that it is significantly stronger than the stock 13" hub. I'm going to convert my truck to a 6 speed in the near future and the new clutch will also be a Valair. I have nothing but good to say about Dan in my dealings with him.

I will say this now, and it will be the last time I speak on this subject. I have used South Bend. I have friends that have used South Bend. I know of a local hot shot that tore the centers out of 3 South Bend 13" clutches. I didn't see them myself, but that is how the story goes. I put a South Bend in my '93 when I converted it to 6-speed. No trouble with it in the 1-2000 miles I put on it, but the guy who bought it from me called and said that after about 10-15,000 miles he was having trouble with it and needed information on what clutch he needed to replace it. I have read ALOT of Valair bashing on here, mostly concerning the G56 conversion clutch. I have no personal experience with this. But I remember years ago that South Bend wasn't perfect either and the response on here were always, "give Peter a call, he'll take care of you. " Why is it that Dan doesn't get the same courtesy with his clutches. I don't think South Bend parts are junk, I've used them myself and can't say I had a bad experience with them. I don't know what the guy did to my truck after I sold it. What is wrong with getting a great clutch at a price that leaves me some extra money.

Okay, I'm putting my soapbox away.

Valair and Southbend both offer good products. Its important to pick the right clutch for your application. I had a customer purchase a valair clutch and had a problem, he contact Dan and was sent an upgraded clutch at no cost. There are lots of stories like that about both companies. I am happy to do business with such great guys.

going to 13" flywheel will give better holding power and a lighter clutch pedal.
stock 3000#
13" 3400# and rated 50HP higher than the 12. 25 equivalent
12. 25 3800#

I'm very pleased with the 13" clutch upgrade I have from Valair and the service afterwards has been good. The truck gets worked very hard pulling heavy loads and plows a great deal of snow 4 months of the yr. Heck, it plowed snow for 3 hours today alone and it's March! It's anything but a grocery getter. Zero problems and the price was significantly less than comparable clutches. I also enjoyed getting to know Dan, the owner. I've installed SB clutches also and they also are a premium product with good feedback. Don't think you could go wrong with either companies.

I am leaning toward Valair for no good reason other than price which is most important to me right now as long as the quality is there and it seems to be with both. Which - again - brings me back to price.

A lot of good information and I appreciate it...

Just to let you all know something who pull loads - I was told I would be hauling 5 Vessels @ 14,500 lbs each... two of them turned out to be #@$%! 24,500 lbs because they had internals. I have a 40' American Gooseneck Flatbed w/ 15k HD Dexter Axles. I got there doing 40mph after one blow out @ 60mph... I run my rpm's no higher than 2,250rpm's to keep heat and unnecessary wear down on my '03 Auto. (Front end is disassembled on my '97... )

#ad

Any way this is just a note to let you pullers know what the Trailer axles can handle... my ST235 / 80R16 tires do okay at 25 -40mph but not 60!

I hope that in the near future I will be able to convert to the 19. 5" wheels with 16ply tires. No Tire Squat, No Overheating, and Loads of Extra Miles...

I'm not a customer yet my original clutch is still going at 211,000 (knock on wood) but when it goes I'll go with Sout Bend. I heard good things about them.

Dang-it, I only got ~188,000 before I belive my clutch center went out. Now that spring is coming I am looking for the replacement. After talking to a tech at the dealership he said that the stock clutch is not designed for engine braking. I guess that would explain why it broke while slowing down:-laf

Stupid question, Valiar only listes 13" for the Getrag trans, will they work on the NV? Guess I need to burn some phone time and get this decided so I can put it in before things get busy this spring.
