I have a 2004. 5 3500. I replaced the serp. belt at about 35,000 miles. It started to shred. I now have 75,000 and the belt chirps almost constantly. Is it normal to go through belts this fast? I can't remember what belt I used the last time but, is there a better belt? Gatorback? Could it be a pulley alignment issue or a belt tensioner issue? Would this be covered under warranty?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jeff

Definitely replace the tensioner because it's plastic. Mine let go when my input shaft snapped. It ate the belt and the tensioner. They're inexpensive get both. THe DAYCO belt seems a bit thicker than the MOPAR belt

Geno's has the parts you need at a decent price:

DAYCO tensioner----

DAYCO 89094 - TENSIONER PULLEY ('03-'09 5. 9L & 6. 7L) DODGE-Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage

DAYCO belt------

DAYCO 5081260 - SERPENTINE BELT ('03-'09) DODGE, WITH A/C-Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage

MOPAR belt-----

MOPAR 53041138 - SERPENTINE BELT ('03-'09) DODGE, WITH A/C-Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage

No, your problem would not be covered under warranty. You may have used a cheap substitute belt from an auto parts store and that is your problem. I would buy a new brand name quality belt from Geno's as well as the tensioner as suggested and when carefully installing both I'd eyeball the alignment looking for any misalignment between pulleys or rough edges that might be contributing to early wear.

sounds like the belt wasn't installed properly. one grove off on just one pulley will cause problems. the idler is a good place to start when the belt is off check all pulleys for play or rough rotation and replace as ness.

I'm a little confused. Is your current belt shredding or just chirping? Mine is original, 71K and chirped from day one and still chirps today. So if yours is shredding then no it is not normal to go through belts that fast.

On edit: Do you use the truck where it gets started and shut down many times a day, like more then say 4 times?

I have the same issue I have 150k and on my 3rd belt
called cummins they said it is maybe the tensioner to loose
cause when I shut the truck down you can see the belt jump
on the power steering pulley. So I got a new tensioner with a plastic
pulley cummins says the plastic pully helps prevent ware I will post my results

Thanks for the input. The first belt shredded at about 30,000. The new belt just chirps about half of the time. No shredding. I do start and stop the truck alot. I'll change the belt and tensioner and report back.

Thanks,

Jeff

Ok replaced tensioner today before I removed it I took breaker bar and used a scale to pull it to a certain spot it took 20lbs to move it. With the new one installed with same procedure it took 30lbs to move to same spot. When the truck is shut off there is almost no chirp so I hope this stops the shredding and I hope this helps
