Anybody else have this problem? If I just turn the key to start the engine, it may or may not start. I have to turn the key on and wait a few seconds, then the engine will start. Is my fuel transfer pump about ready to fail?

You didn't post your odometer reading or anything about ownership or maintenance history so it's hard to answer.

I have always turned the key to "ON" and waited a few seconds to allow the transfer pump to run and charge the fuel system. I'm not sure what else might be occuring during the same pause. The mighty Cummins always starts and runs smoothly if I allow a pause. I have experienced a no start or rough start if I skip the delay.

Your manual should tell you to wait at least long enough for the "wait to start" light to go off. Sometimes in my '06, if the truck is already warm, this light will not come on. But in my '03 it always came on for a brief time.

Sorry - first time on this forum.

The truck has 65K miles, has the TST HPCR kit, and the truck has been maintained very well. It's mostly a tow vehicle. It runs great and tows hard so there's no indication there's a problem. But other friends trucks fire right up without having to wait at all. I don't mind waiting a few seconds - I can be patient - I'm just wondering if this is a symptom of an upcoming problem.

Of course with a cold engine I wait for the light to go off. But this truck will do this at any time, even after its warm, and even if I just shut it off a few seconds earlier.

Ok, Do you here the lift Pump come on right when the Key is on without... the position of starter engagement?

Yes, I can here the pump. As I said, it runs great after it starts. I'm thinking my lift pump might be going out. But I haven't heard of any lift pump problems with the 05 after they changed to the in-tank style.

It's the Power Max CR (there are no mods to the fuel system). It does this whether the TST kit is installed or not. If I just get in, turn on the key, and crank - it cranks and it will eventually start after about 5-10 seconds and it will run rough for a few seconds. But if I turn on the key, and wait a few seconds, then crank, it starts right up and runs fine.

I'm guessing it has to be fuel starvation. Either the lift pump in the tank is going out, or the fuel system is bleeding down such that the lift pump needs some time to get everything primed.

When was the fuel filter last changed?? Check to see if there is a slow leak in the line going to the tank. That would be a high pressure leak. Also check the fuel filter top to see if it is on tight or water drain on the filter is closed all the way---Good luck

Sounds fairly normal to me, I always wait about 3-5 seconds before starting just 'cause it starts quicker. It's definitely worse with the TST in the loop.

Not sure if this would apply to you, but I went to the dealer for a tsb for my 06... About 1/4 of the time it wouldn't want to start, but after the flash it all went away
