Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Groove in Timing Cover From Fan Pulley

After I had pulled the fan assembly from my truck yesterday I noticed that the fan pulley had worn a partial half moon shaped groove into the timing cover. One end of the groove was deeper than the other - I would estimate that the deepest part was at least 1/24 to 1/16 of an inch. Does any one have any thoughts as to what could cause this. Obviously there is something wrong with the fan pulley or the fan support hub/bracket. I suppose the timing cover could be part of the problem as well. The truck only has 68,000 miles on it. Once the cover is removed, I can tell how much metal was left before the groove wore completely through.

Well it finally dawned on me. Probably the reason the fan pulley groove is in the timing cover is because I distorted the cover when I pulled the timing case out too far to release the VP44 shaft. #@$%! I'm sure the clearance between the fan pulley and the cover wasn't much to begin with. I had forgotten that I drove the truck about 15 miles after I did the VP44 install.

Yes, all will be well soon. I've decided to put an end to this project and have the truck towed to a repair shop. See my thread " Trying to Remove VP44 - Question" on this forum; my last two posts for details.
