What is this noise?

I've had the AEM Brute Force intake since the truck was almost new. But, since the Bullydog and especially when towing I have a noise that is more common.



When I'm on it and the turbo is spooled up and I let off, there is a bad noise where it sounds like the air is rushing in and gets shut down. Now it even happens on acceleration when the transmission shifts.



I assume this is just the rush of air coming in, and then stopped when the revs drop. Does this hurt anything? Have I read here correctly that we don't have a wastegate?

It's turbo "bark", you are building boost, then let off abruptly, the air/boost has nowhere to go, it tries to spin your turbo backwards. This is not good.



Same thing thing while shifting, turbo is spooling, trans shifts, rpms drop, boost backs up.



You have an 05, so you have an electronic actuated wastegate. It may be malfunctioning.

My buddy's 06 is doing it too. He also has the AEM intake and he has a Smarty Jr. He thought it was doing it more out here in Colorado in the altitude than at home. Either way, it sounds bad.

Altering your driving habits will help, now that you know what's causing it.

There is another thread on here about the "turbo air guide", one of it's users stated that it stopped his turbo bark. I do not know.

Makes some sense as it could be considered sort of an "inlet muffler".

Yes you can prevent it, you know when it is going to shift... . back out of it right before, just slightly, let it shift, and onward you go.

You have the typical turbo bark/surge on the OD shift lockup that these trucks have with extra power added to them. Bark will sound like lighting a propane torch under the passenger floorboards while the surge sounds like a chuffing sounds 3-4 times real quick.



They all do it and you just have to learn how to drive around it. Watch your boost gauge and you will see what you can run for boost on part throttle shifts to minimize the bark. Judicious action with the right foot can minimize the efeects by letting the boost drop far enough it won't stall the compressor on the shift or getting an OD lockout controller and using it to manually setup the OD shift when your ready.

Call me crazy, but both mine and my buddies truck used to do it, especially his with the HTT, and when we installed stacks it stopped and i cannot make it bark no matter how hard i try. This was the first thing we noticed after the stack install.

sshafranko, that's interesting. Not that I'm considering exhaust mods soon, but I was wondering if that would have an effect, and sounds like it might.
