Thanks, TDR Staff

Is something wrong, or was I expecting too much?

Engine code??

dose any one know if a ECM from a truck with a automatic will it work in a 6 speed truck mine has a hole in it were the rod came thru the side of the engine. i got a motor from the junk yard with no ecm. the auto one is the only one to be found they both have the same p/n 3963994 thanks

I don't KNOW but I'd guess the answer is NO! I very seriously doubt the ECM is interchangeable between an automatic and manual truck because I think the ECM plays a role in controlling the 48RE, right?

I think you'll have to find an ECM for a manual six speed truck.

You can double check my opinion by comparing part numbers.

IIRC, the '03 still used a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control the 48RE transmission. The PCM is behind the passenger side battery. The ECM will probably be the same for both the manual shift and automatic, but as posted by HBarlow, you need to check the part numbers to make sure.

That may be true but the blasted ECU's are vin locked to the peripheral units, cluster, PCM, etc. Its definitely not plug-n-play unless you have Marco on speed dial. :-laf

I guess the you did not understand they both have the same p/n the one i found in a NJ junk yard from a automatic truck has the same p/n and mine

Yeah, sorry, I guess I overlooked the part where you said both trucks have the same p/n for the ECM. I had just poured my first cup of coffee and my feeble brain wasn't awake yet.

Bill Stockard's explanation was correct. The automatic transmission is not controlled by the ECM but by the PCM so the ECM is interchangeable.

The ECM still has to tell the fueling, to de-fuel on the automatics between shifts, which would not be necessary on a manual. Maybe the ECM gets that signal from the PCM?

It seems to me there was post about this exact same subject a couple of years ago, maybe on a different forum.

I would call Bob Wagner, I do not believe they are interchangeable(sp) without re-flashing.
