So Ive been thinking of swapping a manual in my 07 lately, and would MUCH prefer an NV5600 over the G56.

So heres what Im thinking. Find an 03-05 reg. cab with the 6 speed. Swap the 6 speed into the 07 and the built auto into the reg. cab and basically go crazy with it instead of the truck I need for daily driving. Basically the 07 would be a tow rig for the race truck.

In my thinking, itd be a fairly direct swap. Just would need an ECM reflash, that Marco could provide. And use a PCS controller for the auto. Anybody done a 5600 inplace of a G56??

Also, is there a difference between NVs used in 2nd gens versus those used in 3rd gens? I could expand the search to a late 2nd gen then...

Am I crazy?

To answer your last comment first, yes, you are crazy for even thinking such things. However if you're going to to make a swap, I to prefer the NV5600 over the G56 for heavy towing. The NV5600 is what I have on my early 05, built in Nov 04, which has been great for towing.

I believe that all 2nd gen had the NV4500, 5 speed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You must have too much time on your hands. Give it up and go fishing.

you don't need to do any flashes of the computer, there isn't anything controlled on a manual trans, the only thing you would have to do is make a reverse gear indicator switch work so that you have reverse lights. but now that I have read your question a little more, you will need to get a computer out of the auto to stay with the auto transmission, its gonna be hard trust me its not like swapping out a small block for a big block, if anybody can do it marco can

nv5600's come in the 2nd gens too, and I love mine and thats the only manual I would have, the g56 is junk unless your towing every day

Heres my list:

Changes to currently-auto 07

*Flywheel, off donor

*Clutch

*Hydraulic clutch linkage, off donor

*Pedal Assembly, off donor

*Manual Trans obviously, donor

*Shifter and linkage, likley off the donor

*Driveline changes??

*Manual Trans Computer flash, so the ECM isnt looking for the stock auto and doesnt frrek out when its not getting info from it

Current manual to be swapped with auto donor truck:

*Auto Trans from 07

*Flexplate from 07

*Pedal Assembly from 07

*Converter from 07

*Driveline Changes??

*PCS Transmission Controller Sun Coast Racing Products

*Shifter, maybe a Hurst/B&M/TCI floormounted shifter

Am I missing anything? Doesnt seem too terribly hard to me. If I have both trucks sitting next to each other, itd be "relatively" easy

I wouldnt be against getting a rolled truck and putting a new cab on it either...

It would probably be cheaper and more practical to swap with another truck of same year to someone who is unsatisfied with their G56 and then swap out the G56 to a NV5600.

Even though there will be arguments about this next statement, I own both and so far I am very pleased with my G56, and believe the G56 NOT to be a bad transmission. The only downfall to the G56 is the Dual Mass Flywheel, so keep the G56 and swap out the DMF when it fails, if it fails, but if your going to increase the HP/torque then you should change the DMF at that time. In the TDR magazine, I think its issue 53, there is a good comparison of the G56 vrs the NV5600 and was instrumental in my decision to go with the G56 instead of the Aison auto in my C&C. My G56 has pulled at or over the Dodge recommended GCVWR while still staying within the axle ratings, and I was confident it would do the job.

My NV5600 is a hard trany to shift at times, and many times I went from 4th to 3rd thinking I was in 5th when it was new. I have learned since it is a heavy duty trany and you need to treat it like one. I shift it slow and never try to speed shift it. Everything has a draw back, and with the NV5600 it is the expense for repair and finding parts for a discontinued trany, let alone finding a confident tech to repair it.

The difference in an auto to a manual trans is way to much money, time and effort, let alone the ECM difference, it would have to be changed. You would have to have a VIN number of a G56 truck to program the new ECM, they don't come already programed.

Good luck with your project and post your progress with it, and some pics as well.

Well this swap is still up in the air. I may just trade the truck. Dont want to, as I LOVE it, but the auto is killing me. Two full rebuilds, possibly three, in one year isnt ok with me...

Went and test drove an 08 Mega, 6. 7 G56 w/ 14000 miles on it. Was completely different feel than the NV. Clutch pedal felt alot different, gear notches were somewhat different. Only missed 3rd once, after that I was rowing gears like I had put those 14000 miles on it. Really like the integrated exhaust brake, doesnt have the braking power I thought it would, but does a decent job. The other ones Ive driven were autos...

You better be careful, you might like that G56. My first experience with a G56 was one of the first Mega Cab trucks being introduced at a sled pulling event at the LA drag strip. Hunter Dodge was a sponsor and it was there for viewing only. It was the first look at the Mega for me. The officials talked the sales rep into pulling with the new truck, it had 20 something miles on the ODM. It pulled a decent length and was avg for a stock setup, and the G56 held up to the forces required to pull all of that weight.

The G56 shifts real smooth compared to a NV5600, and is an upside to it. Also don't forget the case is aluminum and is a lot lighter than NV5600. That heavier NV5600 will subtract from your trucks payload.

Is your 07 a 68 rfe or is it the 48 rfe? your signature only shows it to be an 07.

48re. Yea, I testdrove a new 09 G56. Dang thing was nice. It was good to be back rowing gears again. The search continues (REALLY want an Electric Blue Mega/manual/6. 7)

I also have the G56 and read this artical and they pointed out features that the G56 has that are more like that other Medium duty truck transmissiont that the NV5600 does not have. I have been very happy with the transmission and the last manual I had was a Z5 in a Ford 250 which my Dad has in his F350 and it felt like it would break if I pushed it like I can my G56.

G-56 reverse location.

Another advantage to this G-56 is that reverse is where it's supposed to be: next to second where it can help you get unstuck. Good transmission with a sub-par clutch.

Until your in reverse thinking your in second, and then release the clutch. I have done this several times and wish my G56 had reverse where my NV5600 is. I also did this on my first test drive with a G56 when leaving the Dealers parking lot, it was embarrassing.
