I want to do my trans this summer. I would prefer to do either a nv4500, or g56, if I can find one. Really leaning towards the g56. It would just about double the value of my truck:-laf:-laf:-laf. NV4500 would be fine, too, and more affordable/findable, as well as a well worn path. Getrag is a known commodity, but I really only want to do this once. Mine, BTW, still seams ok, though I can kinda hear it in 4th, and it needs a new clutch and throwout, so since it's coming out, why put it back in?

Anyone with a good deal on a g56 or NV4500 I can get freighted to Alaska?

What else don't I know? Been reading all the conversion threads I can find...

If yor under 400 hp and don't race with it; it will be much cheaper and easier to rebuild and replace. I would get it done before catostrophic failure. Usaully it will only need bearings and syncros.

I on the other hand am looking into 4500s and G56s to hold more power and shift faster.

The 4500 5th gear is . 74; Getrag . 77; 05-07 G56 are . 79. The newer G56 found in the 07. 5 6. 7s are . 74.

NV4500 and Getrag are cheapest to rebuild followed by nv5600 and expensive G56.

I used Blumenthals Heavy Duty , out of Oklahoma City. Have about 7500 miles on the 4500 I put in last summer. Runs like a top, like all great 1 st gens should !! Also, used them for the latest 5600 in my '03. If you go with them, ask for the heavy duty side , then ask for Alan!

Thanks for the tip MMeier. I know a few people in OK city, too, though not sure how much help they'd be.

glhs, yeah, I know, but I'm not much of a transmission guy... kinda intimidates me. I'd rather try to make the g56 fit than rebuild the getrag... weird as that might be. Also, isn't it getting hard to get parts for the getrag's? I don't wanna be down for weeks. I'd rather gather parts and flog it, that and having the 6 speed for just a lil' more appeals to me, if I can find a reasonable one.

Definitely stay away from the last one you have mentioned. they did nothing but screw my truck up more then it already was. Plus, thanks to them for messing up and cutting apart my clutch hydraulics, I almost got into a major wreck with 2 semis in the middle of the night by Albuqurque NM, line came apart where they were splicing it back together and would not allow clutch to disengage at 75 MPH while exiting I40 . they would blame something else EVERY SINGLE TIME as to why the unit (my 5600) would not shift correctly. Wrong fluid... after they told me what to put in it... oh your shifter is bad... oh the clutch is shot... . blah blah, blah!!! Like I said above... . BLUMENTHALS !!!!

We've went with the 4500 and really liked it. Sell your getrag while it still works. If you tow at all swap it out.
