I get a chime after I start the truck, like I'm low on fuel, but I'm not. No lights or codes. Any ideas?

Check to make sure your grid heaters are not sticking on. This will draw down the system voltage and trigger a check guage chime and light. Check for codes. This issue happened to my wife this weekend and it set a 1682 and 1693 DTC code.

Thanks, for the quick response. No codes, checked it right before I posted. It's almost immediately after starting. Does it about 90% of the time.

This is when the problem happened with my wife's truck. As soon as I pounded on the underhood relay/fuse box, the heater grids immediately turned off. They have been working fine since. It has been very rainy and damp lately. Hopefully that was a factor that contributed to the problem.

I know exactly what your talking about, mine does it about 70% of the time and I think that the doors usually lock too? Perhaps its just a chime for that??

Check your over head display, if you have one, could be oil change indicator.

That is what it does on my Liberty too.

You can disable the grid heaters (if you desire) with no starting problems down to at least around 15F. Remove the two fusible links at the driver side battery positive post. The computer will still think they are energizing, as the relay will still kick on, but nothing will go through it. Saves a LOT of wear and tear on your charging system.

Hoefler... thanks, mines an '04 w/12/03 production date, no oil indicator.

Dieselnut59, you think it might be the grid heater... interesting. Is there a way to test that? If I disco the fusibles, is that a test? Will the grid heater throw a code?

Mine does it too, its always at different times after startup and only when the ambient temp is cold. I am pretty sure that it's telling you that the idle speed limiter has timed out.

If you disconnect the fusible links at the battery, as I described, it will not throw a code, as the solenoids still energize. On my older trucks, I just disconnected one of the actuator wires on the solenoid, but this will set a code on the 3rd gen and newer trucks. You can test with a volt meter at the positive terminal at the heater itself. You can also watch your amp meter (your charging gauge) or watch your headlights dim, as it cycles. I believe the grid heater only activates if outside temp is below 60F. It has been years since any of mine have activated, so I am not totally sure...

This is a smarty STD. Mine does the same thing. Take the smarty out and it goes away. However, I like my smarty better than I like not having erroneous chimes.

I was able to diagnose my wife's truck by the fact that the check gauges light was on and the voltage meter was reading around 8 volts while the engine was running. I popped the hood and put my finger tips on the ground cable to the grid heaters and it was HOT. I turned the truck off. Keyed the ignition 3 times and read DTC code P1682 (Charging System Voltage Too Low) and it was, and P1693 (DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM) which would account for the check guages light and chime. I started the engine back up and the grid heaters were still stuck on by the low voltage I read on the voltmeter in the dash. They cycled one time and the guage read about 14 volts so I knew the alternator was good. I pounded on the fuse/relay box under the hood and the grid heaters turned off and stayed off and system voltage went back to normal. It has been working fine ever since but I showed the wife what to watch for and what to do if this happens again.

humm... Smarty....

Ok, I'll test that. I think it might have started right after Christmas. Guess what I got for Christmas?:-laf Thanks
