Tonight left a friends house get in my truck starts perfect just as always, go off down the road running good no studders. Go through the local wawa. over to talk to a friend turn off the truck talk for bout 5 minutes. Starts back up fine pull into parking spot turn it off there come back out and wont start just cranks sounds like its not getting fuel. So i pulled it off to the side and left it to deal with tommorow. Heres the worst part of the story I GOT PULLED BY A CHEVY GASSER :-laf and my friend of course got pictures haha PLEASE HELP I MISS MY DIESEL ALREADY. the trucks a 93, 5 speed 325,000 miles, has a fuel pin and other pump tweaks. have had problems with shut-off solenoid is this the problem. I hope its not the pump:{:{
 
I recently had the same problem. Mine was the lift pump. It just keept on crankin but wouldnt turn over. Have you checked your lift pump? When you push it down if it stays down its bad. If it raises when your releasse its fine. Hope this helps
 
Just because the lever on the pump moves does not mean it is good.

You need to be able to actually pump fuel with it. When you open the bleed screws if you are getting fuel from the full stroke it it should be fine... if the pump "feels" wimpy, replace it.

It is likely the pump IMO.
 
I actually can write my experience today with a fuel shutoff solenoid on a customer's '92 dually flatdeck. It would nearly die, but never quite die, at idle, or when going along at 55 on the level with partial throttle. I ran a wire directly from battery with an inline fuse to be sure it was getting 12 volts, plus monitored voltage with my Fluke multimeter. It would sit there and falter like a lazy rascal. 12 volts steady. If you unscrew the sensor (you can save loads of time by sawing off the unneeded tab that prevents a good grip on the solenoid- 15/16 wrench) , pull it out, set the plunger and spring off to the side, re-install. Pull the air intake off, just above the fuel pump so you can put a piece of lumber over it to choke off the engine if it starts, as the fuel solenoid will no longer perform this function for you ! In this way you can find out if the solenoid is the culprit. Mine was junk. It had just enough magnetic pull that when you gunned the engine, the extra flow of fuel would open the valve the rest of the way, is my theory. Hence it only showed up at idle. Any more questions and/or corrections, feel free. By the way, I now live 10 miles north of Ontario, Oregon.

On the VE pump there is a lever on the side under the throttle lever that when moved back towards the fire wall shuts the truck off, no need to pull the IC tube off to shut it down. Just hook a choke cable from a gasser to it and you have joined the Pull Cable Club. :cool:

whats up fellas. I seem to be in the same boat here. my truck has been studdering while cruising. i just drove 5 hours from my home in NC back to my familys place in VA. on the trip it studderd on me 6-8 times. its only done it to me at cruising speeds in 5th. i started to notice that when i felt it cut out (instant power loss), if i held the pedal to the floor, the engine would not recover itself untill i left off the pedal. but if i backed off as soon as i felt it cut out, it would recover imediatly. so the more i felt it do this, it made sense to me that it could be a check valve in the lift pump, that was failing to seal. so i changed the pump this morning. tonight as im driving down the road, it cuts out on me hard. worse than usual. so i back off it and it comes back. well i turn around and head for the house. as im takin off up a hill, im in 3rd gettin into it pretty good, then all the sudden at 2300 rpm i loose all power. i mash the clutch in and start pumping the throttle hoping it will recover, nothing, as soon as i put the clutch in the engine stalled out. it got it to the shoulder. got out and checked everthing under the hood, all ok. so i cranked the engine, crank crank crank, no fire. hmmm get back out, check over the solenoid, connections are loose, but no looser than usual. get back in it fires right up. got her home. im gonna check the resistance on the solenoid tomaro, then rewire the wires feeding it. is there anything else yall can think of that this would be? i cant believe the VE has anything to do with this. the truck runs like a raped ape usually. just occoasionaly it will seem like the solenoid has a flicker of a short.

Could be solenoid connection. Symptoms are also sounding like a filter clog (or clogging in the tank pickup).

Could be lift pump. Mine did some strange things throughout the 2 months it was crapping out.

I agree it does NOT sound like an injection pump issue but a fuel delivery to the injection pump issue.
 
I had a similar problem this spring. The problem was that it was hard to "make it happen".

First I thought it was hard starting because of some fuel draining back from the I/P. After long crank it would start. Checked solenoid voltage Ok. Then I checked the voltage while cranking. Dropped way down.

Long story short, I did what I had to do in order to keep my 98 Dodge gasser from acting wierd. I cleaned every ground I could find and ran new frame to engine grounds. So far no problem (and my pyro now doesen't flicker the needle from time to time). Tired solenoid?

So many possible causes I wouldn't bet that the problem does not return but so far Ok. Each one of these deal seems to have a diferent cause, I think I found mine, for now. (My 1st gen not in a Dodge)
 
turned out to be loose and greasy connections at the solenoid. found both connections on shutoff solenoid and connection on KSB solenoid to all be extreamly worn out and full of grease and dirt. i cut all the connectors off and found the wire behind them to be in fine condition, so i put 3 new female blade connectors on and have had no issues since. i checked the solenoid and it checked out fine, so i reckon it was nothing more than a poor connection form the ignition wire.
 
Now you guys, why you gotta be like that? :eek: I've been very busy lately, and only get on every 3rd or 4th day. Now that being said, lets get to business! ;)

Pete, Being almost completly retired I sometimes forget that folks still are productive. Glad you are busy and don't ever think I don't appreciate your Social Security contributions.
