Thanks, TDR Staff
I have a 20 year old S&W 357 Magnum with a 4" barrel that I'd like to sell. I'd like to know what it's worth. It's in perfect condition. Not a scratch or blemish anywhere. The mark you see on the handle is just a piece of lint. The handle on the revolver is a custom made wood. The original handle is also in the photo.

I carry a . 38 in my truck, so I really don't need the 357.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like an N frame, almost certainly a model 27? I would think a nice model 27 could bring over $600, maybe more (and maybe a lot more).

You might want to check out some of the sites like gunsamerica.com, auctionarms.com, and gunbroker.com and look to see what similar guns are going for there.

That's a beautiful Smith, and classics like that are getting more and more difficult to find, especially in nice condition. If you don't absolutely need the money I'd recommend holding onto it.

Mike, I can't tell what model # it is, but here are all the numbers on the stock without the grips;

141K087

C4747

8X484

G7

I hope one of these numbers depicts what model it is

look in the frame, where the cyl comes out.

i'd bet it's a model 19.

might read 19-1 or - a number.

I've not seen that before. it does say, "mod 19' plus some other mark that looks like an *.

I also see another number, which I believe is the serial number. Is there a web site where I can look up the serial number to determine when it was made?

Ahhh guess I AM a wealth of useless information. :-laf
The Mod 19's will go for around $300 M/L depending on variation, is it pinned & recessed etc. Pre _ # ones might bring a small premium of you find a motivated collector.
Your local area may drive that up or down a little.
I hear the "practical shooters" are using them a bit more, that's why theyre up to $300~ish.
I got one a while back for a St Croix offshore rod and a Penn Senator 4/0 reel. :D
I might have had $125 into the setup.
The Mod 19 is a GREAT CCW gun!

This method of ID wasnt in use until about 1957

That's what I intend to do. Now, I just need to find the buyer. I'd like to post it on Craigslist.org, but I didn't see any handguns or rifles listed.

You won't see them on Craigslist because it's against their terms. Check the net for a local gun forum or take it with you to a local gun show. If the dealer offered you $434, put it out there for $500. You're sure to get a buyer.
