Ive been a Ford guy all my life... but a cummins guy at the same time... I don't like what international has done with the powerstroke... and i don't have the time to do another ford cummins conversion. . Any way... Im lookin at a new to me pickup... need a Long box 4 door manual transmission 4X4 Dually. I haul heavy every day. I was originally looking for a '06 with the 5. 9. I have found a '07 with the 6. 7 every thing i want with 30K for $33K. Is there any thing i should look at specificly on the '07s I've done a bit of research and am pretty mechanical. or should i just hold out to find a '06.

I like the simplicity of the 5. 9. I have always been one to work on every thing myself but in reality, i have too many damn projects started and not finished that id really like a pickup that doesn't need to be worked on very often (aside from reg. fluid, maintenance etc. )

Thanks i don't post very often because there is so much dern info if i search for it, but i couldn't find the specifics of buying a used 07 or just staying away from them...

A Dodge with a Cummins is a pretty darn good truck. I'm on my second one. I had a 95 for 10 years and now I have an 05. Prior to that I had an F250 gasser. After my Dodge experience, I'll never go back to Furd. If you want a 5. 9 Cummins, hold out for one. IMO 05 and 06 are your best bet.

I own and like an '08 with ISB6. 7 but it is, unfortunately, jammed up with all the new federal emission crap and some who prefer working on their own equipment might prefer the ISB5. 9.

I previously owned a 2006. The 2006 and early 2007s were a little more attractive in my opinion, had better headlights for night driving, and the trucks with either manual six speed or equipped with 48RE automatics could be equipped with an exhaust brake. The Jacob/MOPAR available from the factory or dealer was fully integrated with the engine and drivetrain computer and worked great. A PacBrake could also be installed and it would work with the ECM/PCM.

BTW, a price of $31k for a used truck with 33k miles is NOT a good deal. A year ago it was possible to buy a brand new fully loaded one with a MSRP of $45k for $31k.

I bought my 07. 5 Mega SLT, with 17 miles (yes, 17 and not 17k :) ) in December of 2008 for, you ready? $27,300 out the door (tax, everything) Yes, i traded in an 01 2500 QC with 120K miles, but the dash was cracked up beyond repair, scratches everywhere, dents here and there, and it was filthy on the inside (by my standards anyway). Kelly and NADA fell around $4,000 for trade in value. Champion Dodge in Gulfport gave me double that. The new truck is loaded, and even has the Infinity sound system, UConnect, and other features that are found in the top of the line package. If you gonna get an ISB 6. 7, get new. Your gonna get a better price, full warranty, and dealers are dying to offload their vehicles.

Just for giggles, it took a little over 4. 5 hours to get the dealer to understand that i WANTED a new truck, i didn't NEED a new truck. Took forever to get off an out the door price of $33,000 and some change. About 8 weeks ago or so, i went back to them to have the flash version checked and asked the service manager why this truck sat for so long (they couldn't answer when i bought it). He told me they cannibalized the O2 sensor and one more thing for an 07. 5 that came in for a P2262 code. He said it took forever and a day to get the replacement sensor's. True or not, i don't care. I paid $2,000 more than my old truck for a new truck, way below mileage for what it should have at this time in its life, and aside from the P2262 code popping (and clearing once on its own) I LOVE IT!.

My $. 02 pre-tax

I agree, if your going to get a 6. 7, Id buy new. If you want a 5. 9, dont overlook the fact that 07s came with them in the early-build trucks. You can get a brand new truck for close to that 33k. I dont see how these guys are selling 2-year-old used trucks for what a new one can go for; doesnt make sense to me. Must be the buyers are out of the loop and uninformed... ?

Thanks Guys. I stopped into a dealership up here in VT... . FRIGGIN' CLUELESS... i really hate when salespeople know absolutely nothing about the product they sell... He had no idea that the cummins was a Inline 6... no idea that they changed it at all in '07. never heard of the emmisions stuff they added to it... He thought they may have added a "turbo" in '07. ERRRR..... Anyway they didn't have a pickup there that fit my needs and didn't even try to locate me one. The only $$ number he even gave me was the sticker price on the short bed Mega cab which i can't use and that price was 54K... I know maybe it was just the wrong dealership... but it frustrates me anyway...

He did show me a used 05 with too many miles on it for me and it was really pleasant to see an actual engine when the hood went up rather than plastic shrouds and a maze of emissions.

But as i have done more research the 33K$ does seem a bit high... for a 30 thousand mile pickup. I think the problem im running into is Im a Picky SOB... I want and exact type right down to the color and manual trannys are a bit more rare around here, that kills my bargining power. especally cause i can't seem to find one with in 750 miles of Vermont... But ifm im going used im better off not getting a pickup that has delt with VT salt winters...

Another Dealership i spoke with over the phone seem a bit better on the knowlegde side of things but unwilling to drop there price below 43K$. They are telling me that due to the building freeze, dealerships are trying to hold on to their inventory to some degree...

Ive just about ackowledged the fact that im going to have to travel to find what im lookin for... One way plane tickets are pretty cheap some time... Its just a hassle and my work is starting its busy season... . Back to scouring auto trader.

I really appreciate your input. . Thanks

IMO - people don't want the 6.7

That's why the 5. 9's are holding their value... ... :)

JPullen, are you willing to travel to the left, I mean west coast? There are a number of dealers here that specialize in out of State buyers, as well as a good price. You can always get a quote and use it for negotiating with your local dealer. I'm willing to bet that you can get it so cheap, that the savings will cover travel expenses, and they know trucks, they can help you in your search.

Your opinions are only that, opinions, not based on much factual information.

Try taking your truck to a dealer and asking him for a bid to buy it or a trade in allowance against a new one and see how it's holding its value.

Or call a couple of wholesalers in your area and get a bid from the guys who actually know exactly what it will bring.

Thousands of new ISB6. 7s have been sold and are in use by satisfied owners. Many TDR members own them and are pleased with them.

I've driven a couple of 5. 9s and those drives make me appreciate my 6. 7. That and 20,000 miles of completely trouble-free service make the 6. 7 my first choice among any of the Cummins. And averaging around 17mpg on a 7,000 lb truck which accelerates like a sports sedan.

I was nervous when I first got the 6. 7 because of what I heard. Mine was built in May '07 so I got one of the earlier ones. I took a chance and hit the jackpot with a great, fuel efficient, nice looking, and trouble free truck for $14,000 under sticker.

Regarding the Fords and Chevys, there are hundreds of thousands of people with those that have had a good experience like I have with their trucks too. They are all good if used as they were designed to be used and properly cared for. All manufacturers have turned out their fair share of lemons as well as good trucks. I'm just glad I got one of the good ones!

I took my '06 to my dealer in March and he offered me $26k with 43k miles, they are worth a lot around here. I was trying to upgrade to an '06 mega but would have to shell out $4k-$5k after trading mine and it just wasn't worth it. For reference, I paid $33k for it new in '06.

You can Buy Brand New 09 2500's 4x4's loaded for 32,000! Seems to me the 5. 9's are in real demand here..... Opps - I knew that already!

In our area - people are not in love with the 6. 7... ... and I'll be willing to bet you the 6. 7 will never see the production numbers the 5. 9 has! Nobody wants the tremendous emission restrictions that were placed on these engines - and all UNDER Your Hero BUSH I might add! And having orphaned cylinders is not a desired design characteristic... . Your stuck with them for now - but I don't believe for long... .....

And when the 07's were available with both engines..... and consumers had the choice - knowledgeable ones bought the one with the track record... .....

Orphaned cylinder? Do you mean "Siamese" cylinders?

The 5. 9 has had its share of problems too. The 6. 7 is a great motor and a it's been said that it's exhaust is cleaner than the air people breath in L. A. !!

(that might be a wee bit exaggerated).

My 6. 7 has been nothing but trouble free. I'd recommend it to anyone. Not knocking a 5. 9 but the 6. 7 drives and pulls much better stock. Plus the EB is a huge bonus!

Was this comment really necessary? Whatever happened under Bush, as far as emissions go, HELL under Clinton in fact, does not even compare to what is happening with Obama! Do the CAFE standards mean anything to you? I am a fan of all of the Cummins engines and would take a new 6. 7 over a a new Powerjoke/Scorpion or Duramax anyday. ESPECIALLY considering that the 6. 7 emissions are set to go for a few more years. The way Obama is working, we won't need to worry about older trucks anyway as he will just make them illegal or extremely costly to drive by retrofitting more emissions crap, and make the manufacture of new parts next to impossible. I feel a nightmare coming on for all of us... ...

Buddy,

Great job thinkin things thru and deciding that CTD/Dodge is the way to go. My 2 cents. After deploying with the USMC, I got a reenlistment bonus, I went to Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource - Cummins - Home. It is free to get an account, then go to the classified area, you can look for everything from Gen 1 to current. This is where I got my truck, and the sellers are great people. I personally drove and viewed 12 trucks before I settled on my 01. Try it out for price.

On the other note, every truck Generation has its quark. You need to find out what niche you want, from the KDP to the turbo gumming on the 6. 7. Its all on you. Enjoy your decision, and hope to see ya around the forums more!!!!!

Kind Regards,

John

I bought my '09 in March for much less than $33k ($27k). It is different than what you are looking for but the point is that deals can be better right now on new verses used no matter what year it is. My '02 fetched a darn good trade-in value and it was because of the Cummins. I will say that I have 8k on the '09 right now and have nothing but great things to say about this truck and the CTD/transmission combo is one of the best I have driven.

If you pull heavy everyday than do not let emissions worry you as the heat you will generate will keep it clean. I have had zero emissions issues with the truck and have only visited the dealer once for a reflash (rapid response) of my TIPM. MPG unloaded for me right now is 17-18. 5.

If your new truck has the "C" on the side then enjoy it as it will pull whatever you put behind it. Your old Ford might beat it in 0-60 but not up the "hill". The choice is yours but I do not see you going wrong with 06-09 models.

Well if the idiot GOP hadn't screwed the pooch the past 8 years, and then nominated a loosing team..... you get what you deserve.....

What a dealer offers you in a trade for a new one when the new one is priced at fully MSRP retail means nothing. It's the oldest trick in the car businesss.

What matters is the "ACV" or actual cash value that the dealer will pay to buy the truck outright.

The figures you quoted are advertised asking prices which are inflated by thousands of dollars over actual cash value.

Take your truck to an area wholesaler or the used truck manager of a Dodge dealership and ask for a bid on your truck. The result will quickly give you an attitude reset.

Dream on.
