Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Do we really need ATF 4 in Transfer Case

The shop manual goes for Mopar ATF 4 for the transfer case. I have a whole case of Red Line High Temp ATF that meets Dexron III and Dexon II-D and Mercon and also API GL-4. I see on the Red Line site they make a ATF-C that they actually state meets Chrysler ATF-4 requirements. Does it really make a difference if the transfer case does not have ATF-4 oil? Is anyone using Red Line High Temp ATF. I will call Redline and see what they say but they do have the ATF-C so maybe the ATF-4 requirement is critical. Just wondering what everyone is using in Transfer Case. I did searches and there is not a lot of discussion regarding NOT using ATF-4 in transfer cases?

Basicly any atf will work. The +4 has better hi temp properties than some more generic atf's

Like Bob said pretty much any atf will work in the T-case, They are really forgiving just need lube. Not critical like the transmission.

I got about 3 - 3 1/2 quarts in mine before it started running out.

I've got about 3 quarts of Mopar atf-4 left what do you think about mixing in 1/2 quart of redline so I can use my remaining portion of the 1 gallon of ATF-4? Or should I not mix different manufacturers. I would think it would be ok since it is just an oil bath for tranfer case chain? What do you guys think?

I had problems with gear clash shifting from 2H to 4H and vice-versa with royal purple dextron in the transfer case. I finally changed it to Advance Auto badged +4 and all is well again. I wouldn't think mixing a little dex3 with mostly +4 would be a problem but, I'd probably pick up another bottle of +4 just to be sure.

They are not too picky. I have put a few hundred thousand miles on mine in very hot and cold with Amsoil MTF (5w30).

The ATF + 4 is the specified lube for the transfer case. There are differences between 3 and 4. The cost savings is so minimal and the change schedule so long I use the ATF + 4. Just my thoughts.

I filled my Tcase with Supertech Dex/Merc. I have about 20k on it like that and I can't tell any difference. At the time, ATF+4 was a high dollar item. Now that it has come down, I would probably use it for my next oil change. I change the trans and Tcase at the same intervals. (every couple years depending on miles traveled)

Well I mixed 3 quarts ATF 4 with 1/3 quart Dexron so we will see. I think the next time since I have a whole case of the Red Line I am just going to use the Redline in lieu of purchasing ATF 4. So far it shifts great; put I have only used it twice. I will report back observations.
