Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Parts no longer available...

Gotta call this morning from my sister, she has a 99. Evidently they drained the fuel filter and broke the lever and mechanism on the fuel filter canister. So she called an online mopar vendor and was told that the parts were no longer available. I told her to get the engine number and call Cummins and again no luck. So they ended up calling Geno's and getting a FASS setup. Just thought I would let you all know to be careful when draining the canister.

That's bad news. We may be hearing that a lot over the coming months. As long as I can remember I've taken it for granted that the automakers and their parts suppliers had warehouses full of replacement parts available and ready to ship.

I wonder if parts will be unavailable and cause trucks to be disabled for weeks if someone experiences failed injectors or some of the electronic control modules?

What is really ironic is that the government mandates that the car makers have cleaner emissions, so they go to electronic everything on the engines. The consumer has to pay more for parts and then they become discontinued. The more I think about it, my next truck may just be another 12 valve.

The simple old mechanical diesels sound good but when the government starts dictating to the private economy what products can and will be sold or used and what sort of stupid restrictive regulations will determins such things as emissions you can't be sure what they will do next. It is entirely possible that the new socialist government will make it impossible to register and illegal to drive a vehicle older than maybe 10 or 15 years old.

For 25 or 30 years the Japanese government has decreed that all motor vehicles with more than something like 30k or 50k kilometers on their odometers are illegal to operate. I think the way they do it is require a mandatory inspection that is so onerous and so expensive that the Japanese simply dump the vehicles and buy new ones. Nobama and the socialists could do the same because the old vehicles are known polluters and the tree huggers hate them.

So is this where we are going? I mean, with the Govern't entering this sector, and the need to streamline everything to get the government out of the industry, do you think they will cancel our parts for the older rigs? I love my 24V, and am looking for that next 12V (should the queen let me). Kinda got me worried here guys... ...

I don't mean to get too political but it seems "management" has done a fine job of mismanaging while drawing big salaries. We the taxpayers have now bailed out these good capitalists. Now we have the psudo socialist looking over their shoulders. What's to worry about? Now where did I put that asbestos suit? :-laf

There have already been bills trying to stop older vehicles from being used and the many aftermarket and classic car enthusiast organizations stop them. but if the makers simply stop making parts available and interchangeable, the people will (for the most part) stop driving out dated vehicles on their own as the maint costs are simply too high. One way or the other they'll get ya.
