I just got back to san jose ca from a 8,000 mile plus romp around the USA. I noticed a kind of shuddering from the rearend like that you would experiance with warped rotors. Now there is a crackling sound coming from the rear end. It sound almost like wires shorting out? I don't think its electrical, just sounds like arching wires but its coming from the rear end?

U Joints

I had to replace mine last summer after I got home from Wa St. The sound was different (more of a squeak).

I had never had U joint fail until this truck...

By the way they are HUGE most shops have to order them.

I also concur on the U-Joints.
If it is as bad as it sounds, I would highly recommend you don't drive it but to the repair shop. When you do, drive it E A S Y!

Fixed it. All three U joints, New rear rotors, rear pads, emergency brake shoes, new rear bearings and seals. Got the U joints with the zerk fittings. Everything alright except sounds like a bearing in the transmission is heading south. Good thing I bought an extended warranty when I got the truck.

Confused... Did your dealer fix all of the above under warranty??

It's funny, I've found u-joints have a whole range of noises they make when they're going bad. When my rear driveshaft joints went out it was a SQUEEK at low speed. But when the front ones went out it was crackling.

Tell me about it until the 05 id never had to deal with u joints. Im still not sure why the seal failed so soon (Real Pinion Joint).

I noticed it right when I completed 22 hrs from NW Wa St to So Cal without shutting the motor off. I was spent:eek:

seafish, I bought the truck used. When i bought it I got an 100,000 mile 3 year warranty. It covers engine, transmission, and transfer case. Paid for all of these repairs out of pocket. when the transmission goes i'll see if the warranty is for real!

Well hopefully they'll cover it for you. . thanks for the info... I was trying to figure out how you got yhem to pay for rotors and pads, etc. Even with my Chrysler MaX Care warranty that covers 5000 parts , they don't do that. So far for me, at 50k on my 2005, they have done an HVAC repair, as well as the 08 Steering upgrade for DW. However, very soon I will be taking it to the dealer for front and rear pinion seals, ball joints, as well as a CD player problem. Also oem shocks are now gone, and they are also covered, but I bought some Bilsteins at their Buy3 get 1 free sale this summer and I am going to have those installed instead of the oems.

Actually, I am amazed at how abruptly the shocks went. I bought the Bilsteins because they were on sale, though my oems were still riding fine. Then just last week I am driving down the road only slightly loaded (truck, that is :-laf) and I my truck is feeling heavy and stiff and rough over every pothole and bump and around each curve, where normally it handles fine!! Tire pressure was fine at 65psi--Got to put new tires on soon, I'll do the shocks at the same time.

Sorry to ramble on--glad your truck is fixed!
