How about a Fifth Wheel then?

5'er Casters

I just drove a Ford V10 van with a 16' box trailer with not too much inside from Long Beach up to Richmond CA. Started with 1/2 tank, 93 miles later I was at Tejon pass with less than an 1/8 tank. A god awful drone from 30-50mph. Only able to hold 45 in 3rd going up the grapevine, it was able to make it to 4th only to down shift again. Mean while a 3rd gen dually flew by me with a burly flatbed and two cars. The day before I drove my truck from Richmond to Santa Cruz over highway 17 with a 27 sailboat in tow. I am glad I have Cummins.

The V10's in vans get the 305hp version while the F-series get the 310hp. The 05' and up 10's have 367hp but the vans still get the 305 version... . the vans also have the powerstroke option as well and it is de-tuned to 235hp and 440tq. My old 2000' MH had a V10 and I thought it did ok for a 35' double slide..... it's a revver though, not uncommon to push these beyond 4K rpm.

My first puller for our fiver was a Dodge V-10. Empty, it would pass anything but a gas station. Lots of get-up-and-go. With the trailer, it was a different story. Did OK on the flats (not impressive, just OK), and really fell on its face in the mountains with the fiver.

Same trailer with our CTD and I am much happier with the towing. It doesn't bog down on the little hills like the V10 did. The V10 had an auto trannie, and my CTD has a 6 spd. Don't know if that accounts for anything, but I would never go back to a V10 for towing.

2 v-10s

I had 2 Ram v10s, a '95 with the 5 speed and an '01 with an auto. While the '01 was a more comfortable truck, the transmission killed the engine--lots of hunting. Now that '95 was a real puller..... used to blow by similar year Cummins Rams (and Ferds, Chevys, etc. ) with ease on the passes here when towing. It loved gas, but back then it was a buck a gallon. The v10 was a great engine, never had a single problem with either one. Thirsty, though. Bruce

I still drive my 96 with the V-10, With a Gibson exhaust it has a great sound that can't be matched (For a gasser anyway). I pulled for 100K with it, no engine or trans problems. At 170K the trans leaks a little but has never been out of the truck. 10 MPG flat out and that is about all it would get, It does pull like a mad dog though. Unlike the Ferd, it won't rev over 4100 rpms, I've seen Ferd's go 6500 rpms in coaches just to try to reach the next gear, sort of sounds like it is going to throw a rod. Now It is a pleasure to tow with a 6. 7l and it gets MUCH better fuel mileage too. But it doesn't make much noise.

I had a 99 V10 (Dodge) before I purchase my current 06 CTD. It pulled my Jeep on a Flatbed with no problems, except it only got about 7-8mpg doing that. I never had any problems with the V10, except the fuel mileage could have been better.

I might be wrong but I believe they still put a V-10 in the Dodge Viper

Yes, they are still putting a V-10 in the Vipers. It's the nice Aluminum block version and it's gotten more displacement since the truck V-10 went away. It's a little ironic really, the Viper engine was originally based on the truck engine, now the off-shoot is the only one left. One can buy it as a crate engine as well, there's even a crate marine version.

wasnt the purpose of the v10 in 1994 to replace the cummins due to increased emissions standards... however the legislation failed and relaxed diesel emissions allowing the cummins to live on.

I just wish i could remember where i read that.

Some of the v10's intro had a lot to do with the lack of a high TQ gas engine to compete with the GM and Ford offerings.
