Hello fellow TDR members. This is my first post so forgive me if I make any mistakes. I heard a different noise from my turbo so when I got home I removed the air intake and found my compressor wheel in the turbo to have alot of play in it. By alot I mean 1/8" play! I was running an edge juice with attitude on level 3 until the monitor was stolen. I am now running a quadzilla XZT 65hp tow module. The quad was pushing high egts since i first installed it. Is this because of the turbo on its way out? Also was wondering if I would be better off upgrading the turbo to an ATS or BD and staying away from all computer mods? Im not looking for crazy hp just reliability with a little extra for towing. Sorry for the novel. lol

Fill in your Signiture so we know where yer at and what yr truck you are talking about.

And Welcome to TDR

If you are talking about side to side and up and down play in the shaft that is normal as long as the compressor wheel does not touch the housing. It's the END play (in and out) that you have to worry about.

sorry guys, I am new to posting on forums. I updated my profile and truck info, hopefully it works. So some play up and down is normal? When I had the edge installed the turbo seemed much quieter than it is now with the quadzilla. It sounds more like a leaf blower now with more whistle to it and when I let off it sounds like I have a huge wastegate letting the air out. Is this normal? I just dont want to hurt my truck. Money for repairs is tight with 3 ankle biters. lol

Ok so I tried to edit my signature, truck profile, and pretty much everything I saw but I missed something because it is not showing up on my post. My truck is an 03 2500 4x4 with a quadzilla XZT 65hp box, volant cai, 4" exhaust, and CFM intake manifold.

Check your air filter and air box and all connections from there to intake manifold. Check header pipe to turbo. It sounds to me like you have something not hooked up some where or loose. When a turbo goes it will leak oil into the exhast or intake sides or the wheels will hit the housing sides.

Sounds about right to me,... alter factory fueling, you hear the turbo, let off too fast... . turbo bark.

first i would go to the smarty jr this will lower your egt, improve the mpg and will complement some other mods you will make. second stay away from ats like it was the plague the size components used are for kids that play and you will suffer huge losses on low end performance. if you do not tow the he351 is hard to beat. if you tow try to go with a 62 65 12 from htt or ii. but only if you need to change turbo. third i would make a trip to home depo or plumbing supply place and get you enough plastic fittings to be able to put air pressure into the turbo, mine cost about $12 to make i used my paint regulator to set the pressure to about 10 psi if you have a crack on the intercooler or a bad hose it will show up very easy.

thanks for all the great info! I checked the turbo for in and out play and found none. I also checked the exhaust for oil but it was clean so I guess im in the clear for that! Whew! I checked the hoses coming from the intercooler and going to it. On the hose nearest to the turbo there are strands of fiber coming off and it feels really soft to me. Thanks for the warning about ats CKelly1. This is my second cummins but would be my first in adding performance upgrades so im a newbie in that. I mostly played with the old mopar muscle cars.

Yes, it sounds like your fine, good.

As far as the first boost hose off the turbo, mine did the same thing, they swell up almost twice their diameter under high boost. When you replace it, keep it under your back seat as a spare, wish I had one in Helena two weeks ago... .

Train yourself not to abrubtly let off the fuel on hard accelleration, this will limit turbo bark and prolong the life of the turbo.
